Re: Fuel consumption... Petrol 90 series only

    When I first bought mine, fuel consumption was between 15.2 - 15.5 l/100 around town running 265/75 BFG/AT's & 91 octane fuel.

I decided to change to 98 octane & after 5000 k's the consumption around town was between 14.1 - 14.35 l/100. I reckon that my vehicle definitely runs better on 98.

Out in the bush with low range work it'll get up in the high teens. Haven't had it on the beach but I expect it would be around 20 l/100 at least as others have indicated.

You certainly don't buy petrol 4wd's for their fuel economy :!: By the way, many moons ago when I had a G60 patrol consumption was 16 miles per gallon around town & about 10 in the bush........

    Cheers,

    Glenn

How many k's are people getting when highway driving? I used to get (depending on weather) around 1000-1200k's from the 2 tanks but now am getting 800-900k. ARound town is worse.... My fuel economy has turned from around14.4l/100k around town to 16.7l/100k. I have changed the AFM which helped and the next thing I think is to look at the exhaust to see if there is any blockage.

Just in case any of you have an iPhone, there is also a great app (both a free and paid version) called Road Trip which is fantastic for calclulating this stuff as well as servicing etc.

If you have an oxygen sensor... people have mentioned it's an idea to swap out or at least test that as well as the Mass Airflow.

Re: Fuel consumption... Petrol 90 series only

Mines sucking fuel like a beast at the moment, I'm only getting a tad over 700k's out of both tanks , it seems to be running fine but just chewing way to much juice. I have done all the usual thinks like clean the MAF, air filter etc.. One thing I've noticed is it's a bit rough on start up, it kind of misses when cranked over then it's alright and if i haven't started it for a few days it coughs and splutters and sometimes blows a puff of smoke. The other day i had to crank her over twice as she coughed and died after the first try. Any one have any suggestions as to what might be going on ?

          Cheers,

could be ignition module , ignition coils , coolant sensor , oxygen sensor , ignition leads , injectors , fuel filter spark plugs etc..... -- best to take it to toyota and get a diagnose scanner plugged in to find fault codes other wise its a costly project by buying parts and replacing through precess of elimination

Re: Fuel consumption... Petrol 90 series only

Just topped up with following figures, highway only using 95 RON:

              238 k's 29.73litres making it 12.49l per 100k.

Have stopped using 91 RON to see how it pans out. Vehicle running a little smoother and with more power but not substantially so. Will continue my tests, esp city driving, but anyone else with figures going from 91 RON to 95RON?

              ken

Re: Fuel consumption... Petrol 90 series only

took the prado for a good run over the xmas break. first tank was on ULP95 and I got a useage of 13.3l/100km
refilled using ULP91 and got a fuel useage of 13.5l/100km
barely any difference, I would contribute it more to driving conditions rather than better fuel so Im sticking with 91 from now on.

on another note, I get 520km to dead empty from the sub tank and 650km from the main. giving me a combined MAXIMUM range of 1170km before I have to call a tow truck.

                reasonably happy with that.

Re: Fuel consumption... Petrol 90 series only

                  Hi,
Did some runs last week 90% highway 10% Urban. Drove Bris nth suburbs to Caloundra & back twice, stayed at 100kph used the cruise control and aircon. It's a GXL V6 manual running 265/70x16 A/T tyres 36 psi, no roof racks, just the bullbar, standard air cleaner no snorkel etc. Only mod is I took the bypass flap out of the muffler some time ago and it's been 20,000k since I changed plugs and looked at the tune.
Used Freedom 95 (which is basically 91 octane with 10% ethanol) and got 13.2l/100 out of it. (21 MPG)
Knowing that fuel with ethanol doesn't always give the best economy I'm going to run it on Shell PULP for a while and do the same run later to see what kind of difference there might be.

I'm getting an Airtec snorkel and K & N soon so wondering if anyone's picked up extra highway economy with those in and has anyone who has had a dyno session and had the computer re-mapped picked up an economy difference?

                  cheers

I'm usually getting between 17-21L/100km, thats for not quite city driving, but a fair amount of traffic lights.

Thats also with MTR's, roof cage, bullbar etc and about 100kg of tools in the rear.

That's slightly re-assuring... I thought I was on my own getting around 16.2lt/100k since I've put on the Cooper ST's and the extra weight of the cargo system and dual batteries etc...
I range at the moment from 14.7lt to 17.5 lt/100k's general driving (city, high-way, loaded with gear etc... roof racks on) to 18 to 22 lt's/100k's loaded to the hilt, towing the CT or boat... or a full day of low range work.
Occasionally I'll sneak in a 13lt/100 refill but only after a full tank worth of high-way driving
                      Cheers, Leon

I think the best I've managed since adding all of the "resistance" is 14L/100 and that was 100% highway driving using both main and sub tanks

                            2002 Prado 3.0 Turbo Diesel 95 Series
Accelerating effortlessly, changing gears at 2000 RPM, with a cruise speed of 80 KPH (yes I am that mobile speed bump in front of you) I am averaging about 9 litres to the 100 around the Newcastle area. From 159 litres of Diesel, I can do nearly 1450 kilometres before looking for another diesel pump. I get about 750 kilometres on the main tank before the fuel light comes on, and I run the sub tank down to just before the empty line. When filling, the main accepts about 70 litres, so that means I have about 20 litres left in the main, and the sub takes about 55, leaving 14 litres. I use the Diesel Flash Lube additive, change the Oil and Filter every 5000 kilometres, as well as clean my K&N Air Cleaner, and rotate tyres. I only use Caltex, as I find I get an extra 50 kilometres to a tank. I have tried all other fuel companies but found Caltex to be better (not the Woolworths Caltex though, yucky, not for me). So, I found with sedate driving I get to enjoy the views better, and enjoy my drive, much more stress free. I leave earlier to go places as I am never in a hurry to go anywhere. Besides, I have 240,000 kilometres on the clock and want to get another 240, 000 kilometres. Treat it right and it will last for ever.

I have heard that about Caltex diesel... much better product than the wollies/coles fuel.

BUT... this thread is all based on petrol engines, maybe you could start a thread in the Diesel Engine 90 Series section (http://www.pradopoint.com/viewforum.php?f=13) about fuel consumption.

I filled up today, have been driving around using Caltex E10 Ethanol for a while. Mostly short distance driving, with only a 110km stretch to from Wagga to Tumut at about 100 - 100 km/h. Did 827.3 km and could only squeeze 120 liters in. That's 6.89 km/l (14.5 l/100km). I don't think that's too bad on the E10 blend, especially as most was short distance and town driving, with a few km's of low range driving thrown in as well.

                                Best I got so far on 95 was 7.6 km/l doing mostly highway at about 100 - 110 km/h.
