Most of the time I was in 2nd gear low range, with some really steep hill climbs (needed the air lockers every now and then!!) and the car was fully loaded with the usual camping equipment.
Looking to do the same trip using just petrol to see what figures I get - lucky I had the auxilliary petrol tank to get me home!!!

Anyway had anywhere near such bad economy

    That equates to 33L LPG/100KM.

I went through VIC high country and used 18-22L /100km of standard petrol.

LPG does use more, but that is a lot more, possibly too much (?)

Just did almost the same trip but this time round used unleaded rather than LPG - Filled up in Licola and economy worked out around 25l/100. Love the Prado but economy is crap - LPG's cheap but has crap touring range/ diesels are way overpriced/ sounds like the best options for hard core touring are 2.7l and adding an auxilliary tank

      cheers

I went from ~12.5L/100km up to ~15L/100km when I installed my Wind Cheetah roof rack and roof tent... I'm hoping the DP Chip install next week will reduce it back down a bit

Ooops... sorry guys... I didn't see the 'Petrol' part of the thread heading...

With my new setup (bodylift, 33's (255/85R16, 4.88 ratios) I've been getting ~15L/100KM mixed driving (highway/city/offroad) and a tad under 18L/100KM for city only.

Mixed suburban driving last week was 28L for 224 kms = 12.5L/100kms
Loaded to brim with camp gear, Oz tent and fishing gear on the platform rack, towing ~600kg boat used 121L for 795kms (~650kms highway and 150kms of general running about) = 15.2L/100kms

I've had my prado since 205,000km and its now got 220,000km on it. It usually ran about 16l/100km around the city and about 10.5l/100km on the highway. Recently had it serviced and got the spark plugs changed, they changed the fuel filter which was basically doing nothing looking at what was coming out of it, must have had a bad batch of fuel too because the fuel going in was terrible. After that I got a carbon clean and since all the recent work it has reduced the city driving consumption to about 13l/100km. Not sure yet about pure highway consumption.

I've been getting around 13L/100kms out of my 99 GXL with 330,000 on it... I think it was 13.4L with some beach work. I've only got slightly bigger tyres & rhino racks

I just put imost of it all down to how much throttle you use (combined with a well serviced vehicle). If you use 1/10th throttle as opposed to 1/3 or even 1/2 then you'r massively restricting the amount of fuel your car drinks. When I'm parked at a red light I always shift into neutral as well.

I've been heavy on the accelerator in the past on Fraser Island and used 25L/100km. Or if you go a little slower with less loud pedal you'll cut that fuel usage in half.

                      • Got mine (3.4lt) last year was averaging 18 lt/100km (only use 98 RON)
I recently got it serviced at the (St)ealers, low and behold consumption is now 14 lt/100km.
I'm still only using 98 RON

No seriously according to LCOOL forum
you get better consumption if you use 98 RON
so I think they probably just set the timing and "stuff"
I haven't been 4 wheeling though, I can only do that next weekend
but it does look very promising

Not with the 5VZFE, the ECU is not smart enough to learn what RON fuel you are using, you are just waisting money buying anything higher than 91 RON, but as 91 Ron is getting phased out, you will need to use 95 or 91 ethenol blended.
It has been a rumour for many years about the ECU learing the fuel RON in the 90 series, but it is false. This only happens in the 120 and 150 series.

                              • So the ECU is not smart enough, but can the timing be adjusted during a service?

I recently changed my air filter and ran an injector cleaner. There was an instant increase of power, and since, fuel economy has improved a tad... perhaps the air filter was more clogged than previously thought :S
