  • I change my air filter every 2nd oil change and run a bottle of injector cleaner twice a season. I have to admit the instant, effortless increase of power is pretty darn good when you add that bottle.

Thats right, the timing is controlled by the ECU, but the ECU does not have the compacity to learn fuel octaine rates. It has been a good wives tail for many years, that after a few tank loads or after 5000k the ECU will learn the fuel and provide more power, this is totally untrue. The only way to get more power is to let the motor breathe better, or to force induct it or to change the ECU for one of the high end racing ones and change the fuel mapping to suit your needs, or if you have the money, do all the above.

      • Might be an old wives tale, but I'm pretty happy with the results of running higher octane petrol. I used 95 octane when I bought the Prado, then changed to 91 octane after a while, and saw the fuel consumption slowly increase over a few thousand km's. Went back to 95 octane and the fuel consumption slowly reduced. I can verify that on my Prado there's a definite improvement from using 95 octane fuel. Used to get about 7.5km/l, which slowly dropped to about 6.5 km/l (on 91). Over the last few thousand km's I'm averaging about 7.5km/l again (on 95). On United E10 I'm still getting around 7.5km/l most of the time.

        • Just recently bought one of these cars, and have discovered that the engine does NOT like E10 fuel.. it burns it really quickly. Also, regarding the fuel economy, with 2 adults and 2 young kids and no other load on basic local driving we're averaging between 15-18 L/100km.. We will be going on a longer trip shortly so we can advise then. The prado is a 3.4L V6auto.

          • Also, the additive that you're all talking about adding to the fuel - do you just mean the regular one you can buy from Supercheap or a Servo - like Spitfire?

            • Well... have been averaging about 18.? lt/100 since ALL the mods have been on my 90 series.

The last, heavy mods were the bullbar, winch, spotties.

Last week I took off the spotties and winch (plus a few other smaller things) in preparation for selling it next month AND...

First fill without the weight of the winch and spotties on the front end was 15.1lt /100ks!!
              Cheers, Leon

              • My long term average seems to have dropped from 17L/100KM to 16L/100KM. I believe this is due to a new air filter and the 4.88 ratios.

                • Just my 2 cents worth.
Filled up both tanks on 2002 GXL auto fitted with K&N air filter and snorkel with 2" lift and moderate load with 2 up. Some city, mostly country driving running on aux tank after fill up of said aux tank worked out to be 12.2 litres/100km. Kept speed to no more than 100km/hr all trip and running 38 psi cold on 265x70x16 Grandtrek highway terrain. This seems OK to me!

                  Cheers Paul

                  • I'm about the same as you now Paul. I've put new 265/75/16 D694LT tyres on, and got a 2" lift now. Running about low-mid 12L/100k

                    • Well, weight = fuel that's for sure.

Just had my 2nd fill up after taking the winch and other bits off the car (pre-sale) and after an 800k roadtrip used 14.1 lt/100.

Scary to think that all the accessories and crap I had in the car added up to 4l/100
