  • 170,000km - what needs doing?

My new Prado has almost 170k and I am taking it to the garage for a service. The previous owner had it serviced every 10k with logs, but it looks to me like the timing belt was 'checked' but has not been replaced. Similarly, it seems there are a few things mentioned elsewhere in the forum (water pumps?) that might be worth replacing to ensure a trouble free future.
Am I better taking preventative action, or let it ride and trust regular servicing will pick up any potential issues?
I don't expect any remote travel in the foreseeable future, and I very rarely go off road at all (although dirt/gravel roads with a trailer are pretty regular). I normally do about 15000km p.a.
I would usually rather spend a little more on maintenance if it decreases the chances of big things breaking. Obviously, I'm no mechanical expert.
I have the auto petrol V6 with LPG.

I replaced the Timing Belt (well, the mechanic did ) as a preventative measure...(mines at 167,000k's) the book says it should be replaced at 150,000 k's.
160,000k's is the 'replace plugs, filters etc...' so I had them do a big 'Health Check' type service.

I don't know much about mechanicals so I just do what the book says and keep an eye, ear out for out of the ordinary things...

I'm sure someone with mechanical knowledge will be along shortly...
    Cheers, Leon

Best thing for a vehicle with that mileage is a trip to cape york and back.

If the timing belt wasn't replaced I'd get that done, but be prepared for a fair whack in the wallet (especially if Toyota service your car).
Not sure if it causes any damage when it does go, but I always do exactly what the service manual suggests, which @ 150000 is to replace the timing belt.

Definitely replace the timing belt and tensioner if they weren't done at 150k. It varies from engine to engine but generally if a timing belt goes it will cause major damage to valves, pistons and head. Doesn't matter where you are if that happens - you'll be going nowhere and it will cost a bomb! For the rest I'd just stick to the book.
Get put there and enjoy the prado!

If you got a non-interference engine, the damage will be less when timing belt goes. I could be wrong but, I think 5VZ-FE is a non-interference engine.

Save some coin. DIY Timing belt change, (great time to clean or replace the radiator and replace the thermostat)
