I am using Prado RV6 1997 3.4L petrol. the Kms is now 254k kms. It seems it is quite high, but the car looks great and works great also. Services done regularly.

I never have any small issue since I bought it 5 months ago. It starts and works anytime I need it.

The fuel consumption is about 400-430km for the main tank, and 330km for the subtank with full fuel inside. I tried to measure like that until I got only about 7liters of fuel inside each tank. That's for almost freeway.

With only local driving, the fuel consumption will be down to about 375km for the main tank, and 300km for the subtank.

So, it seems that my car drinks more fuel that it should be. I usually feel the petrol smell from the exhaust pipe whenever I turn on the engine. Although I haven't notice any evidence of black smoke from exhaust pipe.

Is that normal or not with my car?

Can you bros tell me what is the issue with my car? and how to fix the issue to get better fuel consumption?

    Thanks so much

Do you keep the roof rack on all the time, as that will make you use more fuel, could also be your driving style, tyre pressure, traffic/weather conditions, time of day, what speed you drive at, ect.
I have managed to get 1300k's out of the two standard tanks on a trip from Brisbane to Sydney and drive around Sydney for a couple of days before filling back up and still had about 20lts left, but even then I might not be able to repeat that on the next trip because traffic/weather conditions, ect could be different.
But having said that you should be getting around 800+k's out of both tanks in worse case senario.

      thanks croozza.

i think the roof rack did not change much because I take care of this one usually.

i will try to clean and replace something like air filter, oil filter then see what will happen.

        Re: High Fuel Consumption

        Just FYI, my usage:

Around town: 17-20L / 100KM (all very short trips, with an easy going driving style)
Freeway with a load: 14L / 100KM (I stick hard to the freeway speed limits, eg, high RPM on hills)
Typical camping trip (freeway, country roads, loaded, some 4x4ing): 15L / 100KM

Vehicle is 2" lifted with mud tyres and roof bars. Air filter is quite new, and MAS is clean. Fuel is always premium 95.

          Re: High Fuel Consumption

Got some prelim fuel usage specs, Mainly all city commuting, and a couple hours of play... 14.5lt/100k, I have just switched to using Shell premium 95..... (we dont get 98 in Darwin!!!) will see if it makes any difference, But with the current figures i'm not overly concerned.. It will no doubt change for the worse anyway once the lift and new tyres go on ....

          Cheers

            Re: High Fuel Consumption

Installed a Unifilter a couple of weeks ago, so far over about 200L has averaged about a 5% improvement in fuel consumption. At that rate for me, paying $120 for the filter and cleaning kit, will pay itself off within 6 months. Add to that the smoother acceleration and maybe 1kW more power and it's definitely worth it!

              Re: High Fuel Consumption

              hey guys
i have 2001 50th anniversary model v6,i have defenintly found 95 or 98 octane lowers consumption a fair bit in mine anyway. I have just cleaned the mafs wich ithink helped to .i really want to put snorkel on and open axhaust system up a bit,the standard system is terrible , where the standard headers go from two into one the exhaust is nearly restricted to about an inch diameter ..I got roughly the same as crooza out of both tanks doing a trip from sunshine coast to charlivele almost 1300 km and that was in hot weather.
