  • Trip Economy

Hi all, just returned from a quick trip from Sydney to Ipswich in lower SE QLD.
Was my 1st real open road trip in the Prado.
Had about 300-350kgs of gear on board + 4 people.
On the way up, i started it on the Sub Tank & ran it to 550kms before switching over.
Ran the rest on the the main tank including approx 100-150kms of around town once we got there.
    Filled up after 1210kms & it took 130 litres. = 10.75 l/100kms
Surprisingly, it still had 9 litres in the Sub Tank.

I'm a pretty happy camper with that.

Oh, its a 3ltr Diesel Auto

    Regards, Jay.
Make it idiot proof and someone will make a better idiot.

    Re: Trip Economy

You didn't have to include to last line about being a diesel. All us 3.4 petrol drivers figured that out as soon as we saw 10.75l/100kms.

In fact, now that I thinking about it, I'm getting sick of diesel drivers banging on about fuel consumtion, all I read is "I got 9.5 on a trip to Bunnings", "I got 11.5 on the Canning" "I'm getting 10.9 around town, should I be concerned?"

All I can say is give it a rest boys, and if you truely want to experience the joy of calculating fuel consumption, then step away from combustable chip oil and across into the world of flamable ULP.

I still get excited if I break into the high teens, and I'll never forget that first day I got as low as 15.7, or the time I calculated 33.3l/100kms after a day on the dunes. They're life time memories my friends.

We all know your diesels going to get under 13, no matter where you drive. But 20l/100km? Yeah right, good luck with that. I get 19.5 just backing out the drive.

I wont even begin explaining the unbridled power when towing, or the joy at stopping at every servo between the Gold Coast and Melbourne to fill up coz your average is 25l/100, and your the only idiot doing 80 on the freeway.

So when you guys start getting real fuel figures, us petrol drivers will start listening.
    Cheers

My personal best is 13.2 L/100Km. Avg is 16.something and highest was 17.something.

The average Diesel driver's fuel economy boasting reminds me of when I would monitor the fuel usage of my AE102 Corolla. Somethings in life are not worth losing sleep over.

      Cheers,

        Re: Trip Economy

Here's one for my fellow petrol bretherin, a couple of years back I drove from Brisbane to Sydney and a few days around the western suburbs, a total of just under 1300km, and only used 135lts total, in my V6 Auto. The V6 is capable of those figures or similar, but the MAF must be squeaky clean for starters, then it is up to the way you drive, The drive time from Bris to Syd was 10.5hrs so I wasn't going slow.

So what's the secret to getting a squeaky clean MAF?

              Hey croozza,
Do you have any info on cleaning the mechanical MAF sensors of the early model V6's?

              Cheers,

                Re: Trip Economy

From memory, CRC do an aerosol spray for MAF, (there are other brands on the market but I can't for the life of me remember the names) you need to unplug the loom that goes into it (just after the air cleaner), underneath the MAF, are 2 10mm bolts, undo them, and undo the 2 hose clamps, you should then be able to remove the MAF body, if you look into the MAF body you should see at the back of it a hole, and inside it you should see the hot wire, it should be shiney, if black you need to clean it with the spray, follow the directions on the can to the letter, then reassemble, it may require you to do it a few times, it is always best to do it on every service you get done or do yourself.

I've been using an electrical cleaner for the MAF but have since seen the CRC MAF cleaner on Repco shelves..

I've just done the MAF Sensor for the first time on the 90. Got the CRC cleanser from Super Cheap on the shelf at $25..

Cleaned up the sensor beautifully but I haven't had a chance to compare performance yet.

What I want to know is why, after just having had the 150k & 160k services done, this simple and important operation is not done as part of a logbook service?

                      Re: Trip Economy

In Toyotas wisdom, they did not recommend it to be done, nor do they currently acknowledge that it will cause problems with the MAF needing replacing if left unattended for too long, This is why alot of people are currently having problems with the MAF gumming up, It would be unwise financially for Toyota to now turn around and recommend this needs to be done at each service, as they would be liable for replacement.

i get ~5.3l/100kms on my bandit but can be as hi as ~12l/100kms if I give it some stick

IMO the economy you get on your trip is not as important as the cost of ownership in the long term. In a lot of cases the cost of a petrol compared to the cost of a diesel is about even (ish) over the life of ownership.

                              Re: Trip Economy

I find I average around 13 l/100km in normal use.
On two long trips I averaged 15.5 l/100 kms.
By long I mean over 7000 kms, one was across the Simpson and on through Alice to Boggy Hole, Finke RIver (Valley?) Kings Canyon etc and back via Cooper Pedy, Camerons Corner, Innamincka , the other was up to the Cape via the OTL, French Track etc, on both trips minimal time was spent on the bitumen. And due to time contraints we sat on the speed limit when on the bitumen.
On both these trips the Prado was fully loaded, 4 persons minimum, roof rack with swags, tables, extra spare etc. I was also carrying tools, fridge & milk etc for a 5 vehicle convoy in back along with personal gear for 4 people .
There was 3 diesels on both trips and over all the fuel consumption/cost was not really a major consideration, yes I used more but not by a great margin.
Across the Simpson over the 620 kms in the desert we did, only my brothers Disco 3 used less fuel ... a massive 8 litres less !! 112 litres against 120 litres
So yes diesels are more efficient, but in a lot of circumstances with a properly tuned engine and driving to suit your load and conditions the petrols are not far behind.
