When the car is cold and past 2nd gear it develops a squeaking noise i cant pin point it. It stops when i accelerate. coasting in 3rd and 4th at 40-60km it does it- But not on the highway. Almost sounds like a belt or a pulley slipping. Anyone else had this problem and what was it. Cheers Mass

Dry uni-joint? I know other members have had issues with squeaking noises because of a hard to reach/see grease nipple on the Double-Cardan joint of the rear prop shaft.Declan: 1997 GXL 4.5 Auto 80 series on LPG, ARB bullbar, 2" OME lift, 32" MTZ, GME UHF, rear ARB locker, Kaymar spare wheel carrier

Hi Mass. By the time U-Joints get to the squeaking stage, you can generally see brown fretting powder around the crosses. The U-Joints if stuffed will also usually squeak when idling along the flat in all gears. A quick squirt of lube in all joints and you may eliminate this possibilty anyway. Grease all 4 unis. It is hard to find all of the nipples. I do it this way, put the car on a nice flat surface. Take it out of gear and take handbrake off. Get under it. Start at the back uni, grease any nipples you can see, then, whilst under the car, push it forwards or backwards until the uni turns and the other nipple becomes visible and grease that one. Do this for each one. Do not miss the nipple in the guts of each uni, this will be the one that is most likely causing the problems.
Oh, and pump grease until the fresh stuff comes through. wipe off excess with a rag otherwise it will fly off as you drive and make a mess under the car.

It can also be the front two bash plates rubbing where they bolt/clip together, mine was doing this, still does it in the odd occation.97 VX Grande, with front & rear air lockers, ARB Sahara winch bar with tigers 11 winch, 2" EFS lift, 265/75/16 Achilles Desert hawk XMT, and more.

Hi Mass. Regarding greasing universal joints. Take a bit of care that you don't overgrease. This is a case of less is best. Once you have settled into a routine (every service perhaps) one pump in each nipple is plenty. If you get too keen, you can unseat the seal and crap and water can get in. The hydraulic pressure generated by these grease guns is quite staggering and they are used to tension tracks on bullies and diggers. Croossa was right about the bash plates - mine was noisy after some plonka at a tire shop used it to jack up the front. Cheers.2005 100 Series Landcruiser. 4.2 T/D 5 speed auto.
