  • 90 series front recovery points

    Hi

Having spent considerable time stuck in the mud this weekend and having the bridle fall off the front recovery hooks despite having a flap thing on the hook to prevent this, I'm wondering if anyone has seen any shackle type recovery bolt on bits for the 90 series.
    The hooks are bloody useless!

Have to add that I only have one rated hook. The other is the factory tie down hook and the bridle never fell off of that, just the rated one with the retainer to stop it happening... That's an XTM model from Rays Outdoors.

Someone must a make a recovery ring thing?

Contact Luke at "Lukeys 4x4 Customs", http://www.lukeys4x4.com/ If he doesn't have anything to suit, I'm sure he'd make it for ya. He done my LCA sliders

I like the hooks because it avoids the need for extra shackles. A standard recovery kit only has 2x shackles, which can get used easily in a long recovery.

I was looking at his bits, nice.
I have a lot more shackles etc as we drive by ourselves as well as in groups. Gotta be self sufficient if you are on your own.

I like hooks too but when you are up to the chassis in pooh, the force of the mud simply pushes the straps off the hooks despite the flimsy retainer plate thing. Unless the strap is tied on or there is a constant pulling force on the strap, it can be pushed off.
When you are that deep in pooh, its not nice to be groping under the chassis searching for the hook again.

This situation is not the norm so hooks are generally good but caught once...

Yeah I know where you're comming from mate, I've had a few fall of in mud too. One time it happened before a 2nd snatch pull of a Patrol. The 2nd pull being faster, but without the strap, my car didn't stop, and I when I hit the brakes I just slid in the mud, almost to a tree

Well it certainly looks like it's strong enough. Are there force tests it has been/needs to go through?
When i was hoping to make the GTG, Outback Ideas was the only recovery point for the 90 that i came across. From what i was told is that the guy who produces them is unwell and not making any (this was back in May)
So if yours 'come up trumps' i'll grab a set off you when i'm back in Adelaide. Not sure when that will be, holidays seem hard to come by
Will keep my eye on how you go

              Cheers

I contacted Lukey about 90 series points and he said he does not make them.

Anybody know of other suppliers who make them for 90 series?

So first off, this will be made out of 10mm hardended steel, with laser cut holes, this one will be specific to the 90 series. I'm going to take the hook of mine tomorrow and work out the exact centers of the screws. Then I will get a couple made up and see how they fit and also get a some strength tests done although I believe that they will be plenty strong enough as I have ran them past my father (ex engineer) who made similar sorts of things for braces for 200m chimneys and with that sort of thickness should be able to take plenty of force. So if all goes well they should be ready to go in a month or two that's if it all goes smoothly.

                  Cheers Matt

Matt nothing ever goes as smooth as one would like... just ask AMTS or AJ120
I was going to ask if you are an engineer, but that's the next best thing. Once you are happy they will stand up to the test, fire up a for sale thread and see the interest.
You've already got interested people in only a couple of hours

You couldn't be more right however that challenges faced present a great learning outcome. I am an sparky by trade but have always had CAD as a hobby (I think I may need to get out more ;D) been using it since I was 12. I am 100% sure that they will be more than strong enough.

                            Thats what I'm after.

Without knowing what costs are likely to be, you might want to consider making the mounting flat a bit longer and add another hole so it will fit other vehicles as well.
Wouldn't think it'd add much to your cost but would increase its market reach considerably.

Keep us posted as I'm certainly interested. The only other option so far is a set of Lukeys and re drill the mounting holes.
