Serg_49. I think your concept of and ours are very different. Australians think +10 degrees Celsius requires thermal underwear. ;p

Ps I am going to Fraser Island in October. Maybe we will see you there?

Yes, I am sure our concepts are different ))) I do not wear thermal underwear even with -20C ))) The only time I wear thermal underwear and a warn hat is when I am going ice fishing ))))

I am going to Okinawa in a couple weeks, so I am afraid I will definitely not be able to go to Australia this year moneywise ))

There is nothing interesting at the place where asphalt is, but there is no asphalt at the interesting place...

Serg_49 the Lada I had had the greatest heater I have ever used in a car, although I could never run it higher that 1/4 heat evenin our snow country.
Loved the manual, heater will keep footwell at 20c down to -35 outside. Glad I never got to test it.
Yes we see a few months of snow if we travel to above ~1200m in the winter and get excited.

          Hey BostonKaos,

I've recently done a lot of driving in Canadia and America in their winter and also drive a lot up in alpine Vic (we have a farm up there) so can share some of my thoughts having been in the same boat as you..

Basically, the three rules I followed were:
          - Leave plenty of room in front of you, at least 3-4x normal braking distance (more if you can)
          - Use your engine braking as much as possible before the brakes, and brake only very lightly at speed (avoid the temptation to jump on the brakes)
          - If in doubt, slow down or turn around. Better off missing out or getting there a bit later than being wrapped around a tree or off in a ditch!

Having said that, the kind of conditions we get in the Vic high country are rarely as bad as what you see overseas. It's rare for it to be cold enough for long enough to ice roads up completely but we do get patches of ice, hard packed snow, occasional frozen rain shower and of course fresh snowfall.

Just take it safely and slowly and you'll be ok.

          Cheers!

Wow awesome response in just 24hrs! Thank you all for your input and sharing your knowledge and experience. Specific alpine diesel I had no idea about I thought I would have to just put in a bottle of additive of some kind handy to know I will do some further investigating regarding supliers, I must say I have never heard of an electric blanket being used on a motor but hey if it works... Heaps of tips and tricks you all have offered a very helpful and welcoming community :-)

              Boston,

most petrol stations in and around the alps have alpine diesel as their standard mix in winter.
              If in doubt ask.
