  • Traction Control (90 Series)

Sorry if this is in the wrong section
I own a 97 prado which has abs and a useless lsd in it what im wondering is what is involed in taking traction control out of a later model 99 i think and transplanting it to mine the questions i pose are

    1. Cost vs locker cost
    2. how much time
    3. How many parts
    4. Is it possiable (this should be first)
Hope someone out there can help

    Cheers

I'd suspect its a complicated change, as you'll be converting the brakes from a basic control to the ability to turn on/off specific brakes independently.

The first (biggest) thing to check should be the electrical diagrams and computer wiring harness. I say this because there was a change to the wiring at some stage, older vs newer models, and no doubt this would be controlled by the computer. Cabling could be created but are the necessary the computer terminals in use by something else? (see diagrams) Is the computer the same? (no idea)

If you have access to a workshop manual with the diagrams you could verify this. I can check mine if you require, let me know.

As Glen has mentioned, it will be way too complicated to modify the brakes and electrical system to do this. Just go for lockers as this gives you a 100% traction aid as apposed to traction control which does not.
The price for lockers will be much cheaper than TC conversion plus TC can interfere with momentum and make things more difficult than without any traction aid.

I'm about to do this in a few months.... Although I don't have ABS at all right now.
Early abs was a sellers the hydrolic unit where as the late were all in one unit with no vac booster , it would be possible to utilise the early system but without extensive toyota wiring knowledge I would be far too hard , the extra wiring that's involved with TRC is incredible !!!
The way I'm doing it is I have EVERY part from a ABS/TRC car ( note TRC was an option above std ABS) I've got all the brake lines ABS unit the complete wiring harness hubs sensors even the instument cluster has extra stuff, while I'm at it I'm putting SRS airbags in aswell !
As I have a diesel conversion I'm not even sure if I can get the TRC working

And yes as crooza said TRC can be a pain in da ass off road so mine will have a off button for it
