My 2000 GXL has done ~ 390k and is still grinding along.

No speed demon anymore and the long slow hwy hills kill it but it's still a weapon the tracks in low range ;-)

2000 Prado 95 Series 3.4 v6 GXL, OME Nitro Charger Sport, 2" lift, ARB Deluxe Bar, Warn WD9000, Safari Snorkel, GME TX4500, ARB Air Lockers, Hayman Reece Towbar, Ruffnuts seat covers, Sandgrabba mats

We have ours, bought 2 years ago. It's a 98 petrol auto, and has 200k on the clock. We love her very much It had 110000k on it when we bought it.
We have had our mechanic change parts that needed doing ie tie rods, radiator, and we have also added EFS suspension, roof rack, dual batteries, snorkel, uhf radio, spotties HID, and a light bar.

Owned my 97 Prado V6 for about 4 months and just drove to sydney and back to brissie without skipping a beat.

I have done a lot of repairs myself (mechanic) mainly for reliability not cosmetic. It is the wifeys daily.

            But the cosmetics begin soon

Bought my turbo diesel in 2000 brand new. Fast approaching 370,000km and still going strong.
It's my daily commute as well as getting off road as often as I can.

Still have my old girl. Bought it new in 1996 and it has just over 180K on the clock. As you can see from signature, she's a bit different now compared to when it rolled off the line Been over a year and still love that supercharger whine

Im thinking of buying one a 1997 GXL I'm just worried because I read when they crash tested the drive shaft punctured the fuel tank and made a massive leak.. now I'm reading that the ball joints fail and cause the suspension to collapse!!!? Sounds like a deadly mixture to me?? The recall for ball joints doesnt seem to mention 97 models only 2001-2001?

Never heard of the driveshaft puncturing the fuel tank.
With the ball joint setup. Most cars on the road would suffer catastrophic steering failure if the bottom ball joint were to collapse. Most cars support the lower suspension arm off the lower ball joint, Falcons, Commodores, Camry's etc just to name a few. (I see broken Falcon ball joints on a near daily basis)
Prado's are no more prone to breaking ball joints than any other vehicle, and certainly a lot less prone to than most.
I hope that alleviates your fears a little.

                        Regards, Jason.

Yeah I wouldn't worry about it so much. My rig is still running on original lower ball joints and it's pushed hard. I did replace the uppers once but it was easy to detect the wearing issue before anything drastic occurred.
