  • Steering wheel/column rattle a dangerous issue?

I have noticed a shuddering or heavy rattle in the steering column when going over large bumps or corrugations. It only seems to have started happening in the last month or so.

It basically feels like the steering wheel moves in/out about 5mm when I hit a bump in the road. I cannot seem to replicate the problem by suddenly pulling or pushing on the steering wheel no matter how hard I try.

I have done some research and found similar users report this problem with the 120 series.

First of all I just wanted to find out if its likely to be the same problem I have?

And secondly is this something I need to get fixed ASAP as in is something going to suddenly break and leave me stranded or even worse lose my steering functionality?

My Prado has done a lot of K's and it looks like replacing the column and/or some bushings is going to cost me anywhere between $800-$1200 (1/4 the value of the whole car itself).

I haven't heard of it but its not play in the rack transferring up through the wheel.

All steering columns have a collapsable part that in an accident compresses. So it may very well be a worn out steering column.

Sounds like the steering rack mounts are flogged out mate.
      Cheap and easy to do.
