98 Rear Fuel Tank replacement

Hi all,

I picked up a 98 Prado a week ago to be my fishing car

However I'm guessing someone before me had it on gas and then someone took it out as it only has 1 tank (side - not sure on size) as you can imagine this car chews so need the 2nd tank. Currently that side tank is showing on the main fuel gauge but after doing 80kms it's gone under 3/4 fuel.

Is that side tank the sub or main from factory new? I'm pretty sure I've found a rear tank and straps at the wreckers but after any advice at what I may need more than just tank, hoses, straps?

Also when I turn sub tank off and green light goes off car cuts out, so confused with that, main fuel gauge shows current level sub tank gauge shows 0 yet green sub light is on.

Side tank is sub tank. When put on gas, they've swapped the sender wiring around show the sub shows on the main gauge.

The rear tank is normally the main tank, it sounds like the sender wiring in the sub tank has been connected to the main tank sender wiring.
With the standard twin tank system when running on the main tank a small portion of the fuel return is bled off to the sub tank. There is a solenoid valve assembly in the fuel supply & return lines that switches supply between main & sub tanks.
It sounds like this assembly is still connected so when switching back to the main tank your engine runs out of fuel.

The solenoid assembly is under the passenger side in front of the sub tank.

Thanks for the replies, much appreciated, I know it chews fuel but I didn't think that bad. So at this stage im spoken to my mechanic and he can fit the tank when i get it, i just need to have certain parts and what he told me to get are the following.

Wires
Hoses
Tank
Straps
Protective Plate
all Bolts

So ive spoken to the wrecker who cannot give me a time frame but will call me once they have pulled it all out, hopefully in the next day or so. I just asked them for the rear tank for a 98 prado, so hopefully that with what listed above thats all i need.

I will get the mechanic to check all parts of the fuel as when it clicked when side tank was full, it did spit some petrol out onto the ground, but not sure if it was just where the fill plug was put so you cannot put nozzle down main shaft.

again sorry for the long post and thanks for reading, but given what is said above is that what is needed to get the car back to its 2 tank capabilities? I just need to ask the mechanic to make sure he puts side tank as sub on dash and main tank as main fuel next to speedo?

Wreckers called today, the prado they thought they had it in was on gas, so no tank, and no wreckers have any that i can find

Thanks that I did, about 30 wreckers later found one and its now sitting in my garage with all fittings, straps, bolts and bash plate

Was a little disconcerted after about 20 wreckers LOL, hopefully get it fitted early next week
