Need New Transmission

Hello,

i need a new transmission. Seems there is no 2nd gear. Hard acceleration from a stop or slow speed takes the RPM's to the red line and doesn't come down unless I pump the gas back a little bit. No power up there either at high rpm's. It's a royal pain in the @#@# to drive like this.

Where I am in the Dominican Republic they want me to buy a used tranny and put it in and hope for the best. They tell me the rebuild kits they get from the USA don't work long term and therefore a used tranny is the best way to go. Somehow I think they don't want to be a real mechanic and get in there and do a real job.

I have a 2000 Prado VX turbo diesel.

I was thinking about going around and looking for the cleanest used tranny myself and taking that to a place for replacement. Or possibly importing one if I could find it and ship to me.

Any suggestions on what I can do?

Kzn185 hilux surf/4ruuner have the same box
Have you had it checked properly? It could just be soloniods not working right...

No.

The local people here don't check things properly. If I asked them to check the "soloniods" I'd spend 15 minutes trying to explain to them what it is, after I looked it up, since they most likely don't know the word. Nor do they use equipment to check anything. I'm dealing with a 3rd grade level of education in this country. So real mechanic reparations are asking a bit too much from them.

I do have a gringo mechanic but he doesn't work on transmissions. So I'm a bit stuck.
