  • Bash plates and sliders/steps

    Hi all,

I have done a search but most of the information I feel is quite dated. I am looking for both a bash plate and heavy duty side steps to suit my KZJ95 Prado.

I have found the Brown Davis bash plate but it seems quite exxy. Certainly a good unit though.

Additionally it seems that custom is the only way to go for sliders or steps for these old girls.

I have found myself getting into some rougher situations lately up at Terowie 4x4 Park and Jakem Farm and larger rocks have been a little threatening. I figure that some dollars spent now will save hassles in the future.

As far as steps has anyone experimented withe tapping them and using as air tanks? I suggested this to a mate who thought it may lead to internal corrosion issues which I guess is a valued concern.

    Cheers in advance!

I recommend the Brown Davis bash plates.

There's another popular brand, can't recall the name, but it lacks central supports which would make it particularly weak for playing on rocks.

Yeah that's the one. Nice enough but without those central supports it'll easily cave in on a rock step. Mine's stronger but I still put small dents in it.

Yeah that's fair enough. I think the extra $100-$150 would be worth it for the piece of mind. I will add the Brown Davis unit to my list. Thanks for the help!

Here's an intimate view of my old generation plate with a mod (lower section due to lowered front diff). Also note custom grill below bar due to 1.5" body lift + bar lift.

Definitely looks the goods there Glen. What tyres are you running on there? And what are your thoughts?

255/85R16 (skinny 33's) which are between 33.1" and 33.5" tall when new. I prefer these over 285's - which are slightly wider but always just under 33" tall. I want the max height without having to go 35's, and there's nothing in between 33 and 35, except for Simex style tyres - which are too mud oriented for my needs.

I bought the plate second hand, which is supposedly an old generation Brown Davis. It's had a few mods since then, and more to come. I recently raised my drivetrain (engine/transmission) which has created some excess space inside the bash plate area, so after some trimming and a new front section welded, the approach angle can be improved further. I'm also raising the transmission & sub tank cross members to suit the drivetrain lift, to be followed by custom protection all the way back to the rear links. These mods will gain around 1.5" to 2" of additional clearance.

I can vouch for Brown Davis gear as well. Their service has been excellent, replacing a cover plate at no charge, after a Toyota service mechanic replaced the fuel drain cover plate incorrectly.

For those interested I have recently made some updates to my build-up page (link in my sig). I went with the Brown Davis guard and a custom set of sliders by Bar'd Up 4x4 in Adelaide.. Cheers
