Does a Japan import have a check engine light?

Hi all, I'm currently trying to diagnose a issue with my car and I want to check if any error codes are being logged in the built in diagnostic tester.
Problem is when I turn my cars (Japan import ) ignition switch on I don't see a check engine light symbol being displayed. If I bridge the TE1 and E1 terminals on the diagnostic port under the hood the "O/D OFF" light starts to flash every half a second instead of the check engine light.
Just wondering if anyone with an import has heard of this or could try turning their ignition to on and have a look for me.

What year and engine do you have ? and what are the symptoms you are trying to diagnose ?

1998 TX Limited 3lt turbo diesel auto, I have another thread going in 90 series general discussion but basically huge loss of power after 10 minutes of driving.

I think? there was an update August 99, RM710E is the service manual that mentions the diag connector in the engine bay. I believe pre Aug99 engines had an "engine" shaped CEL, later versions had a "turbocharger" shaped icon, what's yours? Pre 99 it seems you need the Toyota diag tool to interrogate the OBDII port in cabin.

The flashing overdrive light in a Hilux Surf (for example) is to show codes for the auto trans ECU. I would say these early Prados are the same. I've also seen this in other Toyota cars of the same vintage when the engine and auto trans ECUs were separate units.

My 95 Hilux surf (jap import) certainly had an engine check light. Have you trying changing the lamp in the dash cluster?

Shoukd have a check engine light...
all the 1kzs do across all applications

Thanks guys removed dash cluster and found the bulb had fallen out. Replaced bulb and found 3 fault codes.
Good to know the OD OFF is for tranny.
