  • Ticking sort of noise

Sounds like a tappeting/scuffing noise coming from engine but had the tappets checked 4 thou ago all ok, but wondering if its possibly a tensioner for the timing belt. I have heard many falcons tapping away and its sort of not that sound. Bit hard to describe but its like when the fan/air/power steer belt is going around. Its not a squeling or anything but seems to have happened after dunking in the mud a few times so wondering if theres any crap in behind the timing cover or mud/water etc has got into some of those bearings etc pulleys behind the cover ??? Belt was done at 100 thou and is due again at 200. has 178 on it. wonderng if some degreaser or some thing has got in behind the cover when Ive degreased it get get rid of mud.Water pump seems ok, no leaks or losing water or anything...............   Steve

have a look at the bearing on the pulley tensioner
These things hate a dunking when they are warm, very important to let it cool before doing a water crossing
If that is the problem then it is cactus and will get worse from here on

Hi there xvPrado, do you mean the timing belt tensioner or the air con pump. I had a look last night and there is also a tensioner pulley just below aircon pump (would cop a flogging from mud and sand I reckon). I sprayed a bit of WD40 on it just to see and it seemed to shut up a bit so it could be that. There is still a slight ticking sound but I think thats just cause Im listening to what ever I can hear and is possibly the injectors pulsating. I havnt driven it to work today have wifes car so will check it out again when I get home. Thanks Steve M

Before going to far, just try a bit of hand soap on the belts and see if the noise goes away. Or spray some water.

            Re: Ticking sort of noise

g-day -im new to this forum -been checking out some posts for an upcoming trip to cape york and accross simpson desert . i get a ticking sound coming from my engine now and then and have been told it is just the injectors.its not there all the time - i bought the vehicle when it had 80k on it and its done 160k now .still runs great engine wise. just changed plugs after 40k since last big trip and old ones looked like new. i service mine myself and do so every 5000kms (mainly oil and filter)
            hope this may help

I have had this problem before. It is the air con pulley at the bottom. I have replaced this pulley about 3 times! This is the only I have found to shut it up!

                Hi there
I have had that noise recently aswell, and do you know what fixed it, it was my exhaust with a leak in it, and when it got hot it would tick, just like an old ford would
so everyone check that out aswell cause that could be the problem

Had a ticking noise, sounded like injector or rocker area. Needed up being a loose spark plug.

Hi guys, my first post on this forum, and thanks for all the knowledge you have!

My Prado 3,4l v6 1998 Lwb have started ticking from the engine, sounds like a tappet or something like it, don’t know exactly the whereabouts but from the drivers side and the charcoal thingy ticks as well now but louder..

Excuse me for my English, I’m from Sweden. Thanks again!
