  • Sub tank problem

Hey guys, my friend has a 2002 amazon sahara with dual fuel tanks. when the switchover switch is pressed it runs on for a while and then dies as if it is getting no fuel from the sub tank. Has anyone encountered this before? would this be a solenoid problem, are they common?

    Any help appreciated!

    Re: Sub tank problem

Most of us are in Australia and we have dual tanks as factory fit BUT there is no real sub tank. The two tanks are interconnected and fuel is pumped between the two. If the pump is not pumping then possibly a solenoid but then you would expect the engine to stop as well if there is no fuel being pumped.

Thanks for the reply, it is an australian import so i think its a factory installed unit he has. So when the switch is pressed it pumps from the secondary into the primary until its empty? I taught there would have been separate lines from each tank with a solenoid controlling which one was active?

Nah mate, with the Aussie model there is NO SWITCH. It just sucks both tanks dry but there is a pump that takes from the rear to the front tank as the front empties.

2002 in Australia is a 90 series, and I think you'll find they have a sub switch. If it is a 90 series, will get more help in 90 series forum not 120.

                HI
Could be anything! Bad wiring (green death) loose conection, relay.
When you change out the fuel filter you run the sub then disconected the sub wiring plug to preasurise (i think thats what they call it) and let it run till it dies.I had troubles squeezing this back together. So maybe thats come undone. That is located front of the rear left wheel near the chassis. There should be two plugs there one white and i think the other is blue, by memory  .
Cant remember how to check the relay but its in the gregorys manual (just flew out for work today will be able to check next week) or somebody might be able to help you with that (think it was under fuel checks or leaks??).
                Best of luck

                  Re: Sub tank problem

If it is a V6 wether its an RV6, GXL, Grande they all have dual tanks including the diesels except the 2.7, there is a switch on the lower dash which you select to either run the reserve tank or the main tank. its nothing like the 120 series where there is no switch, you dont have a choice with the 120, it drains from the main first then from the second tank both 90Litres, the 90 series have two tanks one is 90L the other 69L, Personally I think its a better set up then the 120 as you can pick which tank you fill and run from, around town I only use the reserve tank, and keep enough in the main to keep the fuel light off, occasionally I will run from the main to get rid of the fuel before it gets old. I fill both tanks chockers when going away. Sounds like a solenoid problem to me, When you flick to the reserve tank the switch is down and a little green light lights up on the smaller fuel guage next to the radio...Regards Steve M
