So I was in picking up the car after the new altinator was fitted and sitting on 158,899km I thought I'd ask about the 160k service. I have to admit the response knocked me back a few steps ... "Ah, about a grand" he tells me. So he jumped on the service desk computer and looked it up and turns out that it is a "multiple of the 80k service" no s***, that's what he said :roll: The actual price of a service from my local Toyota dealership is $868. I have to admit, still a little shocked.

Come Monday I'll be shopping around a few alternative service joints for a better price!

Anyway, the reason for this post is to try nut out the average costs of minor and major services. The 150k is a major due to the timing belt, and the 160k is a major too due to "ALL filiters and fluids" being changed, then apparently at the 170k the cost drops considerably. So anyone else get bent over the money bucket for the 160k?

your always better off going to a specialist 4wd service centre, for your servicing needs. It is cheaper, and they will no what to look out for problem wise for your vehicle.

With the cars these days all you have to do is change oils and filters the on board computers run and adjust things for you (to a degree).
Minor service usally consists of just engine oil and filter change and fuel filter when due. And a general brakes and other checks. And can cost around $300.
This can all be done easily enough at home ( cost me about $40).
Magor service they will do the above and diff, trans oils,and hook it up to a computer to see if its all running right (usally not hooked up unless asked or engine light is on).
The home services people talk about is pretty much all that is need for a car that is now out of warranty (timing belts and faults i personally get a mechanic for, but have a sqizz first ) and keeping track of coolant and spark plugs and leads.
Its the labor that cost and the little things like a charge for the waste oil to be desposed of (my local tip does this for free).
Not saying there bank robbers, they have to charge for there time, and nobody runs a buisness for love!
But there is always better or different ways to go about things.

Anyways, with the smount of work that's been done to the engine since buying it, the new altinator and shady service history, I decided to bite the bullet and put it into the Toyota dealership for the MAJOR service. Whilst I'd like to have gone to my local 4x4 service center, I figured THIS TIME I'd go genuine and ensure everything is good to go and any faults are picked up now (I figure Toyota should know their vehicles better then anyone - probably a can o' worms comment but hey).

So, dropped it in at about 0715 this morning for the big 160k service. While they were checking my details I noticed that service history sheet for the vehicle going to them. Apparently not long before I bought it the Water Pump was replace (sweeet, one lesss thing to worry about). They ask if I have any concerns, I tell them I have a knock coming from the rear at slow speeds over bumps ... So, the service, ballpark $850, I get a phone call no more then 1 hour after dropping it off to tell me the rear brake pads are shot and that's the noise ... great me thinks! So thats another $180 to replace the pads. So I ask, what about the rotors? (I know they are on the verge of requiring machining due to brake shudder, but don't mention that) so they say they call me back. 30 mins later they tell me all 4 rotors require machining, luckily for me the guy that does their machining can be there in an hour to do it not affecting the time that my car will be with them and it will only set me back another $150 (yay ... lucky me :roll: ). Maybe I'm too soft or just being sick and having a shit of a week is getting to me but again, I let it go and said "Just get it done".

After today all should be SWEET on this rig and all further standard services will be done in the comfort of my own garage!

Keep an eye of the For Sale folder, I may start selling blood and organs :shock:
