    Wazza,

Use a hitch receiver on the rear like this (about $50):

Check the body and chassis threads for front points. There are heaps of threads on this topic already.

Donot put the recovery point on the bull bar, as it will pull the bar off of the front, the recovery point must always be on the chassis at the front, on the rear you can use the hitch recievers as the tow bar is rated, just make sure that the bolts (for the tow bar) are in good condition (not rusted), if rusty, replace them.

          Re: recovery points

I have 2 x tow/recovery hooks (Bushranger brand) bolted with high tensile bolts to the chasis. I have used the 2 bolts on the left and right side that bolt the bullbar on. I needed to get longer bolts to replace the existing ones. My intent is to use a bridle recovery from these 2 points if I get stuck. I will be replacing the hooks with a couple of "Lukey's" recovery points, I just have to measure the bolt to bolt distance so he can confirm which set fits the RV6. On the rear I just a hitch Bushranger rear recovery hitch with a 4.5t Bow Shakle.

On the front chassis rails the car will normally have tie down points from when the car came over for Japan, just unbolt them and any recovery hook will normally just bolt on in the existing holes, I have put two on the front doing just this.

                Re: recovery points

I bought a 2001 GXL a few weeks ago and am struggling to find the right advice on the recovery points.

I have spoken with both Outback Ideas and Mannam Motors and both have said they have never made or installed recovery points on a 90 series.

My tie down points are bolted to the chassis and then connect across to the Bull Bar (Toyota factory fit) and it is part of the structure holding the bull bar on.

You can’t take these tie down points off as they hold the bull bar and there are no other bolt holes that would allow you to attach hooks.

                I’m stumped!

The tie downs are all in 8mm plate steel.

                Any suggestions?

I also have a factory fitted Toyota tow bar rated at 2500kg braked and 750kg unbraked and with the sticker that says ONLY TO BE USED FOR TOWING APPLICATIONS.

Of course it uses any bolt holes in the chassis that would allow you to attach a hook. Am I an idiot to assume that the tow bar will take a Bushranger recovery hitch rate at 4.75t?

If you read my post above, I have bolted my front hooks on using the same bolts that hold the bullbar to the chasis. You will just need to support the bullbar when you remove the bolts and get some longer HIGH TENSILE bolts to replace them so they are long enough to reach with the recovery points mounted. I got ARB to fit mine when I bought the hooks just to save me some stuffing around and there is a "Specialty Fasteners" joint around the corner where we could get the right bolts from.

The tow ball should be a removable one (NEVER recover using the ball). As per the first post in this thread and my above post, get yourself a hitch recovery point to slot into the receiver. About $60 - $80 from any ARB shop.

If you need a photo let me know and I will try post one after work this evening.

                    Thanks

A picture would help - I am having trouble visualising how the Bushranger Hooks would sit against the tie down bracket.

I know specialty fastners so will be able to sort the rest out.

Sorry mate, wrestling with a sick child this evening and a bit dark out to take the photos now. In your last image (PradoTieDown3) you have the 2 bolts at the bottom. These are where you can fit one of these each side to fit a bridal for recovery http://www.bushranger.com.au/tow_hook_with_keeper.php as I currently have (as i mentioned you will need longer high tensile bolts to replace the shorter factory ones). Or, as I intend to do when I finally get off my ass to measure the distance between those 2 bolts, you can fit a couple of Lukey's recovery points (which if i'd known about them sooner I would have done in the first place) http://www.lukeys4x4.com/products/recovery-points.html ... the advertised ones are a 3 bolt config but he has emailed me to say there are other variations, hence the reason I need to check the bolt seperation distance. If you still need the photos I will get them tomorrow arvo ... sorry about that.

EDIT: I am actually wondering if the tie down points you have aren't sufficient enough for recovery??? I have a factory tie down HOOK that was ... well to be honest ... pathetic, and any recovery strap would have slipped off. If in doubt regardless, the bushranger hooks are only about $25 each + cost of bolts and Lukey's points are $88 a pair + cost of bolts. So not a huge outlay regardless for peice of mind.

                          Re: recovery points

Looking at the Lukey's they seem to have the same thickness plate as my Tie down points but I'll see if I can google that.

I'll see if I can find out from Toyota what grade steel they are made from....won't hold my breath but it might be strong enough.

The problem is, because the tie down point and the bull bar bracket is a combined unit, the bull bar bracket gets in the way of where you would mount the Bushranger Hooks or the Lukey's

                          A photo would help

                            Hi Michael,
Just had a look at mine (factory bullbar as well) which look similar to yours except mine seams to be cut off at the bottom (orange line down) and two holes drilled. And the recovery hooks bolted on sideways. I think your right about how they may not fit on your setup??

thanks - I might have enough room to get bolts through from the inside which means I can mount the hooks on the outside.

                              I'll check it out tomorrow
