Tow balls have been known to shear as they are not designed for the loading imparted by a snatch strap.
There are recovery points available that fit into a reciever hitch as the towbar itself should be secure enough.

This probably should be highlighted in this topic and is a timely reminder of how dangerous recoveries can be.

Apparently a failed factory tie down point could have been one of the failed links in the chain of events that led to the death.

Is it worth the risk?
