  • Front and Rear Diff Breather Extension - How To

Ok, we all know by now that there is a write up on another site about how to extend your diff breathers but nothing on PP. So rather then plagiarise I thought I'd record my efforts and post the details up here. Anyway, here goes ...

    My Vehicle: 2000 RV 3.4ltr V6 (90 Series)

    Tools Used / Needed:
    + Stanley Knife
    + Flat Blade Screw Driver
    + Side Cutters
    + 14mm Ring Spanner
    + 11mm Ring Spanner
    + Permanent Marker
    + Safety Glasses
+ 1 pair suitably rated vehicle ramps

    Parts:
    + 1/4" Male-Male Barbed Brass Hose Fitting
+ 1/8th BSP - 1/4" Male Barbed Brass Hose Fitting
    + 1/2 doz Cable Ties
    + 2.5m 1/4" Fuel Hose (or Similar)
    + 2 x Z92 Fuel Filter (or Similar)
    + Hose Clamps x 5
    + Silastic

    FRONT DIFF
You can see in this picture, the factory raised diff breather. Just simply pull the valve from the hose.

Place a hose clamp over the existing hose and insert the 1/4" M-M fitting. Tighten the hose clamp to secure the fitting in the hose.
Connect the extension hose to the fitting and secure in place with another hose clamp.
Run and secure the hose in place with cable ties. Where you run and secure it is entirely up to you, but you can see where I have run it in the image below.
Measure and cut the hose to length. Use one of the filters to guage length and position before cutting.
Place another hose clamp over the hose then insert the fuel filter into the hose (if using similar hose to me you will find it to be extremely tight and may require a little heat to soften the hose). Secure in place with the hose clamp and secure in place with a cable tie.
I have written the date, kilometers and "F/DIFF" on the filther in permanent marker, not necessary but helps me to remember.

    REAR DIFF
Ok, the front was easy but the rear was a pain in the ass ... until I shot down to Supercheap and picked up some vehicle ramps.

N.B. - This is where eye protection is good. I had a lot of dirt and s*** falling in my eyes whilst routing the hose and messing with the rubber grommet.

Put the back end up on the ramps, this will give you much better access to the rear breather. You can see in the pic below the location of the rear breather (the photo was taken from the passenger side looking towards the rear of the vehicle).

Here is a better image of the rear breather itself. If your vehicle is as dirty as mine it would pay to give it a clean around the breather now to avoid contaminants being knocked/brushed into the diff when your remove the breather. Using a 14mm ring spanner, remove the old breather.

Here is a picture of my old rear breather, as you can see, I doubt it was actually doing anything

The replacement fitting can be secured with an 11mm ring spanner (lost mine somewhere so made do with a small shifter.

Connect and secure the hose to the fitting with another hose clamp. I left a "maintenance loop" so as to avoid the hose being torn off with drive train travel over rough terrain.

I routed the hose through the existing hose loop and over the sway bar. I figured this would keep it relitively well protected from getting snagged on braches etc.

It then passes over the corner of the fuel tank guard were it is secured in place with another cable tie.

Using the stanley knife, cut a slit in the rubber gromment big enough to push the hose through. Try and keep the hole as small as possible. Don't pull the hose tight, leave some slack under the vehicle. Again, this will allow for drive train travel over rough terrain. I used Auto Silastic, a fair bit of it too, and smeared it over the hose and hole to prevent water, dust etc from getting in

I needed a staightened coat hanger to fish the hose out of the bottom of the jack/tool bay. Once again, measure and cut the hose (cut it longer then needed and simply push the excess into the bottom of the bay). Place a hose clamp over the hose and fit the fuel filter. Secure with the hose clamp and secure in place with a cable tie. Again I noted date, kms and "R/DIFF" on the filter.

    JOB DONE

Now you just need to extend the transfer and transmission breathers. Good luck.

        Nice job BTW.

Yeah, I have been researching those. I'd like to find a better way to do it then have the hose tentitively connecting to such a small protrusion. I'll get to it though. I am just writing up my snorkel install how to that I installed today. Not a pro by any stretch but sometimes these things can help others that may not be confident or just not sure where to start.

I think it's great that people go to the effort of writing up the How To's. Makes it easy for an inexperienced person to come along and do a bit of DIY. Also good for the rest uof us to look at peoples techniquies and how clean a job they do.

I've still got to do the transfer and transmission on my 120. Will be a bit of a B to do but will get done around Christmas, along with a few jobs I didn't do and have put off since last Christmas.

Off to Condamine River Road tomorrow....if its open, so I did this mod this morning.

Info was great, thanks for going to the effort with the detailed info. Only thing I did different was that on the rear breather once inside the car I just loosened the top 10mm both that secures the jack holder making enough room for my hand to fit behind and pulled the hose through rather than using a coat hanger.

              Photos were very helpful, 10/10

Re: Front and Rear Diff Breather Extention - How To

Thanks enormously for taking the time to do the Write up.
I fitted mine today, but decided to run my rear breather through to the engine bay.
I ran the 2 hoses through a T piece & into this little K&N filter. It is a dedicated breather filter.
I went to Western Filters at Blacktown yesterday to purchase 2 filters like the ones used in the write up & he said to me that they block up quickly when used for this application, as they are normally used with mild fuel pressure pushing through them The oil mists inside the element & clogs them up.
Might pay just to keep an eye on the Ryco's, but they are a much cheaper option than the K&N. It was $35.00
Cost me about $55.00 total all up to do the whole job. Very Happy.

Your write up made the install easy to do

I'll make a better bracket to mount the filter later, i just rubber mounted it on a pretty flexy bracket for now.

                      Regards, Jay

Re: Front and Rear Diff Breather Extention - How To

                        No problem Jay.

I looked at those K&N filters too. Only thing that turned me off was that they are quite suseptable to water intake purely because they are an open filter. They don't come with the rain sock that my high flow pod filter came with on the H-D :P

So that's why I went for the fuel filter, it's enclosed apart from a very small hole at the top and if you note that that way I mounted it in the engine bay was to point the inlet to the rear of the car to reduce the risk as much as possible. If you avoid too much water under the hood and perhaps get a hold of the K&N recharge kit and oil up the filter regularly it might do just as well. Maybe even go buy a K&N rain sock designed for pod filters (or if you can source the material somewhere) and alter it to make one, and a couple of spares with the spare material, to fit over the filter you have. I think they sell for $15 - $20 each (well the Screaming Eagle H-D ones do anyway).

I'd be interested to see where and how you routed the rear to the front though if you ever find yourself under the rig with a camera. I am considering upgrading the install (one day) to one of the pro kits.

Re: Front and Rear Diff Breather Extention - How To

I did think of that when i put it in, then when i washed the engine bay yesterday, i thought id better make a cover up for it.
Was thinking of something along the lines of a towball cover or something similar mounted over the top.
The stud on top of the K&n Iis quite long, so i can drill through the middle & poke the stud up through.

                          Regards, Jay.

                            Hi,

Was just wondering the purpose of using fuel filters instead of just using the stock breather caps already in place and just extending the hose?
