  • Snorkel customizing one - my story - Is this good? PLS HELP

I am asking a new question about Snorkel, but I am not so sure about the result before doing the job. So it is better to post it here to ask bros.

    My short story

Firstly, my wife is an anti-modified Prado. She absolutely hates all the modification that I created for the car, even if they are: hometheatre system, 240V system, power windows, power mirrors, LED all around the car, massage system,..... Whenever I put the modification on the car, or I intend to do it, she tries to prevent that happens. If the mod done, then we argue for a long time, and she claims about that for a long long time. What the hell my women even she does not know anything about the car, and even if I explained many times that I created it better for her when she drive the car next year

Secondly, she claims that she REALLY HATES the Snokel on other cars (including Prados) that she watched on the road. Even if I tried to explain a lot for her but nothing worked.

==>> Of course, consequently, she NEVER WANTS to see that Snorkel appear on our Prado. MY GHOST

Finally, I have to accept that fact. I can not add the real Snorkel into the car, at least at this moment, just to keep the family stay stable with the happy smile on my lion's face (may be when we travel somewhere else and we stuck in water, she would think again, but should be long long time in the future as we don't have much time to find water for off-road).

HOWEVER, I still want to have a Snorkel in my car that she never knows it is there.

    MY PLAN:

After thinking for a long time, I decide to make a crazy plan that the snorkel will go to the center of the front panel, some where under the hole of front glass wiper.

I take off the driver side cover on the fender. I found the way that my Prado breathes.

I intend to create an external plastic pipe (or rubber pipe) from the last point of the original pipe (big red circle), then run that external pipe along the fender and up to the surface just under the front cover above the front glass wiper ( The blue circle), of course I will have to drill a hole for the pipe where the blue circle is, but at least my lion will NEVER KNOWS that it is what I did because she never looks what is under the hood

As I thought that, this place will have good air, also it does not have much water even if with the heavy rain or whenever we clean the car. And I can make the pipe curve with my modification, so the water has no way to come into the pipe.

    My questions are:

    - Is this good enough for a snorkel?

    - The height of the pipe is quite acceptable. As far as I imagine, the water can not enter that part in anyway except the level of water is higher than the hood. In this case, I think that even with a real Snorkel, the car should stop because there is all water above the engine - Do I think right?

    - The original plastic pipe has one small hole under the bottom (the small red circle in the first pic). Is this the hole for water goes through if water has any chance to get into the original air pipe?

Because I intend to cover this hole when I do my conversion. Actually if I still keep this hole there, the water will get into it easier.

    - Can I replace the big plastic pipe there and just add a long plastic pipe from the point where the air filter start working on the fender? Is this option better than keeping the original part? Will this affect to my Prado's breathing?

Thank you very much for your reading and reply. I really appreciate.

    Simple answer would be no.

By doing what you suggest, it would appear you are creating a channel for water to follow directly to your air intake.

Additionally, there is no supply of clean air in that area. You will be sucking dead HOT air from the engine and it will drastical kill your performance.

You need to purchase some balls LOL. I had to sell the idea of a snorkel to the wife. I did it by telling her that without it it could cost us thousands should water enter the engine. The only reason you get a snorkel of for water crossings, so obviously you intend doing them, and therefore your engine will be at RISK of catastrophic failure / damage. That along with wathcing Roothy (4x4 action) attempt Frenchmans track and one of his companions saying it is the first mod any 4x4 owner should do .. sold it to the wife unconditionally.

Yep, first time water comes over the bonnet you have a direct channel of water into the intake... Also, the induction noise would be a lot louder. I assume that would cause all sorts of family harmony problems.

I think that its probably not a good idea either!
Simply put, the idea of a snokel is to get the air intake as high as practical and away from any potential water ingress.

Currently, your intake is in the vicinity of the engine bay, and after your mod, air intake will still be in the vicinity of the engine bay, ie no change and no benefit. Which may also lead you into a false sense of security when it comes to water crossings. I'd personally go with either fitting a snorkel correctly (no loving for a long long time), or not fitting a snorkel at all (keeping missus happy - lots of loving!)...

Or perhaps you need to just buy some Lanotek Lanolin spray (or WD40) for the electrics and a tarp or dedicated water crossing sheet (check the MSA website) for the front of your rig and be a little more careful / selective about the crossings you attempt.

Alternatively, if your engine has a few problems, do nothing and when the piston fires through the bonnet, turn to the missus and simply say ... "told you so". Then get a new engine AND a snorkle

What about that big hole OP found in the existing plumbing? Should that hole be there in the first place?

thanks bros very much. I really appreciate all of your enthusiastic helps.

Probably I will give this topic to my missus, then I hope that she will change her mind soon.

My wife never wanted snorkel either, i wore her down over time and then settled on an airtec vs safari as it was less intrusive.
Now she doesn't even notice it and if u r the driver u can't see it at all.

Yeh agreed... not a good idea! Even if you do a water crossing lower than the hood, the water can get pushed up and over and cause you many problems...

If it's the look of the snorkel she doesn't like, is she more likely to accept a snorkel if it's a better looking one? Could get something like mine made up out of stainless steel:

You guys have got the wrong approach.

I didn't even ask, just did it - when the question was raised about the 'ugly black thing' I explained that it will stop us getting stranded in deep water, and she won't have to sit on the bonnet waiting for rescue or deal with drying out all her sodden clothes and stuff afterwards. Topic was never raised again.

Mine was easy - our mechanic "recommended a snorkel" due to the fact he'd found mud in the airbox a few times. Perhaps you can bribe the mechanic to write something similar.
