  • Replace front lights with 4 x 35W HID x oval globes

Before going to Tasmania, I decided to upgrade my lights in the front of the bullbar with 4 of small oval globes + 35W HID 6000K. The oval globes I bought from Supercheap Auto for $39/pair. HID kit just order on Ebay from Hong Kong.

It took me almost 1.5h to modify and install one pair. I had to cut, round some small parts of the bull bar to get them fit together. But then the result was nice.

Actually, those small HID lights worked like a champ. Only 4 of them are far better than my original low/high beam. The light was very bright on the road and covered almost 180o viewing in the front. So I could see very well to avoid animals crossing the roads when I drove through forest areas.

Here is 1 pair of oval globes on one side.

Here is how the front looks like after done the job.

One orange illuminated switch was installed on the right of dashboard, just under the controller of electric mirrors. Power was provided from my 2nd battery, just in case to keep my main battery working well. It is ok if I turn on this setup + all LED lights around the car + low/high beam+ DVD 6.1" + 12.3" LCD + 4 amplifiers (for 4 x 12" subs + speakers). However, the 2nd battery only stays at 11.7V with this whole things turned on. May be I have to take a look into the power source.

Here is how it is in the night

Neat install, but what was in the holes before that? Was it the parker/indicator combo light?

I would just be worried about getting defected for no parker/indicator on the bullbar (ADR requirement) and the fact you can now have more than 6 forward facing lights illuminated (another ADR).

Are they wired to parkers? or a beam selection?

Why put those lights in when legally you can not use them.

yes, it was parker/indicator there. But one side was broken and I could not find a good replacement for some weeks. That's why I did this mod.

        - I can install/mod back those parker/indicator ones.

        - I did not wire them to parkers nor beam. I did install them separately with one switch (the orange illuminated switch that I stated above), so I can turn on/off on demand.

As far as I know, if we don't turn on ALL lights at the same time - I have 8 in this case, and the total number of lights are not over 6, it is allowed on the road. Is that true? Actually, I don't use my spot lights on normal roads as they are not supposed to do there.

Because I saw many cases, other cars have 6 (at least 6) and they turn on all of them: 2 low beam + 2 high beam + 2 ground light.

Please correct me if I am wrong. Thank you

Re: Replace front lights with 4 x 35W HID x oval globes

          Me no likey.

IMHO it really doesn't look too appealing and the car is looking more like a carnival ride then anything else.

Legal? I think not. If you use those as your primary diving lights one of two things is bound to happen. 1 - you'll be pulled over and fined as they would, at best, be defined as fog lights, which are acutally illegal to run unless conditions are such that they be required. Or 2 - the first person you pass in the opposite direction will do a U-turn, follow you and if you are lucky, spike your tyres.

If you are gonna use them, I'd suggest saving them for off-road.

If light, or the amount of light was the issue. Why not just upgrade the headlights with a higher output HID and/or put on some Lightforce HID spotties or similar in place of the Narva spotties you are running.

They are not called ground lights, they are fog lights, you will cop a fine if the cops pull you over for using fog lights in any condition other than fog, Just because other people illegally use fog lights, does not mean you should do as well. I would be very carefull using those lights, however they would be good off road at night.

+1 for it being a cop magnet.

1: You've removed your indicator and parking lights
2: Driving lights HAVE to be wired up so they only come on via a seperate switch ONLY when your high beams are on

Regarding your first point, it's not something I can honestly say I've taken careful not of but don't all bullbars have indicators in them. It's either just indicators or indicator parker combination. I would think this is to compensate for the bars obsructing a clear view of the indicators from the front of the vehicle.

I would like to put it out there that if this is in fact illegal, this thread should be deleted in total.

So we should delete all the other threads that deal with modifications that don't meet ADR's... that's a very long list of threads!

I think it's just time to remind people that they (and they alone) are responsible for ensuring that with the modifications that they make to their vehicle it remains roadworthy and compliant with the ADR's rules and regulations applicable in their state or territory. Anything on this site is purely for discussion and general interest and does not imply compliance with rules or regulations. (i'm sure someone more capable than me can translate that into proper lawyer talk)

Back on the original topic at hand, if the lights were "decorative" items for "offroad" purposes only, and the issues with the parking/indicators were sorted (maybe some of those small led blocks) then there wouldn't be an issue with ADR compliance?

Still, in the end I'm voting +1 for cop magnet too!!!

I would wire those to the high-beams. They´re probably awesome on the road, but I´m sure they will blind anyone if you pass people or come up behind them with those lights on. Having them wired to the high-beams eliminates the risk of you forgetting them on when passing or coming up behind another motorist, blinding them.

Is it just me or do people seem to be a bit more hostile towards infraredfotografy than other users? Sure he needs some pointers and he´s not too concerned with vehicular rules and regulations, but it seems like people bitch about his stuff more that anyone elses.

I would not do all those things to my Prado and I would definetly ticket him if I was a cop, but we should be easy on the guy, guide him, don´t alienate him.

                      Hawk,

I appologise to you and IR if you take offence, however, I use the same roads as everyone else. It starts to bug me when people do things that start to endanger me or my 19mo son when we are out and about. I could really fire up and go on and on with all the arguments about rights and safe practices, but all I will say is that yes, my comments may in fact be a bit blunt when something can be considered a hazard on the roads. Granted these lights may not be that bad but where do you draw the line on illegal and/or dangerous things.

I will leave it at that, I don't want to start something. I am more then happy to have an offline discussion with anyone that would like to debat it as I am always happy to be proven wrong and/or learn something new. So PM me and happy motoring :P

I would tend to agree with RogueAussie here, modification to the existing arrangement of lights of an ADR approved bullbar would, i suspect, be a worthy defect point!
Put it into perspective of - for example - replacing rear brake lights with decoritive illumination, just not the done thing....

This one best left alone i think...

Re: Replace front lights with 4 x 35W HID x oval globes

Actually, I did intend to change my high/low beam to HID 6k before going to Tasmania last month, however, it was not on time to get the kit. In the mean time, I got some kits of HID 35W 6k only, and of course, my parker/indicator was broken for a while.

I don't use this setup frequently as I know they are quite bright. But when I drove to Tasmania. I got some times to use it when I drove through forest areas at night. It was very helpful to avoid getting accident with animals there.

Also, I got "heavy rain", "heavy foggy", and "snowy" when we drove to Cradle Mt . You will see how good this setup is at that time.

BTW, Thank you for all of your ideas. I will keep this setup for my use with very careful use on the road as a fog light. Also, I will install back the parker and indicator.

                          Cheers,

My opinon for what it's worth.
Doesn't look the neatest where you have them, perhaps you could make some new holes in the bullbar next to the indicator openings and recess the new lights into those. Maybe only use 2 of the lights (one on either side) that would give you 4 extra lights and also enable you to put your blinkers back in the bar.
Don't use them as fog lights, IMO they are too bright and have the wrong lens shape and will just blast light back at you and will also piss other drivers off coming the other way cause they will be blinding
Don't forget to wire the lights up properly to the high beam circuit so they work when they should if you're guna use them as spot/driving lights.

I'm not sure if it's a reflection or it's the light but your headlights look red to me. If they are red, change them so they are white as you are not allowed to have red lights that face forwards.

Apart from all the ADR concerns I recon it's a pretty good mod.
