I'll be able to have a good look at it tomorrow & may take some photos, not sure what caused it to fail. Seems to me that it's the quality of the boot itself that is the problem as both the drivers side boots (original Toyota) are still OK. I'll ask my mechanic about lowering the front suspension a touch (I think the Bilsteins can be adjusted via a circlip as per the 120's :?: ) as this will bring the driveshafts back to a bit more level position.

Or leave as is & fork out $$$ for genuine boots :?: although I did find that Superior Engineering have inner only "long travel" boots listed on their site http://www.superiorengineering.com.au/p ... ts_id=3677

Not sure what to do at this point........

Re: CV boots splitting due to suspension lift ?

I've had a look at the CV boots today & took some photos. Seems as if the passenger side inner boot has been rubbing on itself causing some perforation. Drivers side still looks OK but I'm wondering how long it will last.

I also took some suspension height measurements, from bottom of wheel rim to underside of flare:

      Drivers side: 800 mm
      Passenger side:805 mm

Springs are Lovell's raised heavy duty - TFR72HD

Drivers side inner boot from underneath (Genuine Toyota AFAIK)

Passenger side inner boot from underneath (aftermarket)

Notice the difference between the 2nd rib on the inner boots? The Toyota one (drivers side) seems a lot bigger than the aftermarket one (passenger side). Maybe this is the problem :?:

Still waiting for my mechanic to get back to me......

Looks like the after market also has less 'ribs' in the boot than the genuine one... 6 compared to 3 or 4.

Yes this is certainly the case on the outers. The inners both seem to have 4 ribs with the aftermarket one having a smaller 2nd rib as per the photo.

Same measurements I had with Dobinsons, now back to 765mm with Kings. I've also noticed all four of my aftermarket boots have lots of hairline cracks right through them - they are only around 3 years old. Add a bit of rubbing and it looks like some more expensive repairs for me down the track.

Re: CV boots splitting due to suspension lift ?

Yeah 765 was the measurement on mine with original springs before the Lovells went in. The Kings must be standard height springs then :?:

Re: CV boots splitting due to suspension lift ?

Mine was around 735mm, OME suspension took it to 760 (with steel bar added at the same time), added a couple of spring packers and a winch and its at 775mm now. It would be nice to know what the factory height was, 735mm was after 10 years of sag on the factory springs.

That 765mm height on mine was taken in August '07 so the vehicle was just over 5 years old & had 62,217k's on the clock so I reckon that's reasonably close to standard factory height.

How are you CV boots, still running originals :?:

Yeah still original boots, they look ok still but are showing the same rubbing wear on the ribs like the pics in this thread.

Re: CV boots splitting due to suspension lift ?

Got my car booked in next week for new genuine inner & outer boots to be fitted. These should be better than those aftermarket ones I hope.

May try & adjust the front suspension down a bit if that's possible :?: Unfortunately my mechanic doesn't know a lot about Lovells/Bilstein suspension

So if anyone knows if the front suspension setup on my car can be height adjusted, please let me know. Thanks :!:

Re: CV boots splitting due to suspension lift ?

Had a new genuine Toyota CV boot kit fitted the other day, parts cost $144.20 (retail). The kit contains 1 each inner & outer boots, all clamps & a tube of grease. The spring seat on the Bilstein shocks was lowered from the middle circlip position to the lowest (there are 3 settings). Result is that the drivers side height is now 790mm & passenger side is now795mm, a difference of 10mm from the previous setting. Big deal

Cannot get it any lower but the vehicle seems pretty well level although it could go down a touch more but that would mean installing medium duty springs. Don't know how they would cope though with a steel bar & winch but I'll leave it as is & just keep an eye on the boots. Couple of pics after the job was done:

Re: CV boots splitting due to suspension lift ?

If you undo the two front bolts that hold the diff in ( about 300mm long ) pull down on the diff and put two 4mm spacers between the diff and the chassis then put the bolts back in you will lower the front diff enough for the drive shafts to be level. 4 mm dosent sound much but it does work and the bolts are just long enough to refit safely without having to buy longer bolts.

Thanks raydes; I have seen spacers & longer bolts advertised somewhere so that's worth considering, for the time being I'll just keep an eye on those boots

It looks like you have the circlip on the Bilsteins set to the top notch. Is this correct? It may pay to move it down a notch, seeing that you have the HD springs, the angle may be too much. Do you have much weight up front ?
