90 Series Broken Suspension

I looked underneath the truck today after my wife telling me the steering didnt feel right to find a broken suspension rod.

I've attached some pictures, can anyone tell me why this may have broken, what it is exactly and what I should replace it with?

I have a 2" lift & 1 Size Higher Tyre.

looks like swaybar bushes have flogged out and worked the nut lose. You can just buy replacement bushes like Nolathane brand and replace them. from repco etc.

Also check the inner CV boot on the same side. In that bottom photo it looks like it could have a hole in it. Theres alot o grease & grime so it may have worn a hole in it.

The panhard bar is on the rear of the vehicle, mounts to the chassis on the drivers side and the diff housing on the passenger side, it stops sideways movement of the rear diff.

Legally, it's a bit debated as to wether it needs to be there or not.

there is no debate. if the car has them fitted from the factory then they are required to keep the car road legal, but you can do away with it, kind of the same as you can run the car on bald tyres.


Nolathane bushes are stiffer and I wouldn't use them for any suspension movement parts. they are fine to use on swaybars as the only movement is the pivoting in the bar at the two chassis mount bushes.

Hey - Thanks for all your help. I'm putting it up tomorrow to get everything checked out, I was very suprised to see how much grim was around the area so I will get the whole thing checked over. I'm off to Fraser in a month and want the truck 100%. My wife uses the truck to drive herself to work and the kids to Kindy so I don't let anything go that is at all unsafe or comprises the safety in the event of an emergency.

I got the problem fixed - It was the Sway Bar Link Pin as mentioned. Cost new was $160 from Toyota but managed to get one from a wrecker in top condition for $50

Next job is to replace the Boots on the CV joints - been quoted $200.00 for both *sigh*

That's installed - The mechanic says its a time comsuming job pulling everything apart to get to them.

Exactly the same on my 2001 95 TX

Driving on the sand last week and was hearing some metal-to-metal clunking. After an extensive underside survey, found exactly the same situation. Looks like it's probably been that way for at least 4-5 years from the amount of rust and wear on the broken bit. Not terribly happy that this wasn't spotted during the many routine maintenance services that have been performed.

Old age , not giving the car a real good wash after beach work there one of those parts that die you are better off in the long term buying new genuine

That looks fairly corroded.

Just wear & tear with age unfortunately.

The one's i have for sale are uprated over the factory one's.
