When I bought my current prado a few years back the old owner [mates father] had just put new tyres on it,a set of Maxxis ATs, I though I would give them a bit of a trial before I swap them over to BFGs.Well they performed better than expected and are still on the car, they have now done 90000km and still have a bit of life left in them. I only this week priced some new AT tyres both BFG's and the new Maxxis 980 but there is only $20 difference between brands,so not sure which way i will go but the Maxxis I currently have on the car have exceeded my expectations for a so called cheap tyre. Like alot of things these days the older brands have been resting on their reputation while the new players have stepped up a gear ,Toyota and Hyundai being good examples of this.

depends on what you want, I don`t rate a tyre on how many km I get out of it. Most important thing is wet weather grip, wet braking , tyre noise, handling, then all that in the dry.
I have had poor experience with coopers, they go hard and last forever and are horrible in the wet. BFG A/T have been very good.
Currently my pick is D697`s, have done 55000km , 20000km with caravan on , and by rotating all five will easily get another 25-30.stepped up the a 200 LC for towing,
but had a 2012 and 2010 150 Prado GXL auto diesel in Graphite with Bridgestone D697 A/T. Dobinson C59-300/325 and Bilsteins. Accessories : two baby seats. Sidewinder`s Dual Battery isolator and rear power outlet kit. Pirana Battery tray, Hayman Reese towbar with Toyota wiring kit and Brains`s guard.

I cheat and run two sets, BFG AT for trips and bush work and road tyres for most of the day to day kms. The Dunlop's are quieter and grip better that the BFG's by miles on the road and you cannot beat BFG-AT for tripping and some serious 4x4. If I had to settle for one set of rims only I would get something less aggressive than BFG-AT's, Look for a tyre with a strong sidewall and preferably some decent tread on the shoulder and highway bias tread and not too hard. I would rather only get 40,000km and keep the vehicle than try to go for a tyre that last 80,000 and crash on a wet road.Prado Polar White 150 GX 3.0 TD Auto. HR TB, ARB delux bar, Hella R2000 lights, Magnum winch, ARB 50mm lift, BFG AT 265/70R17 on 71/2" alloys, Alloy side steps, Rhino sport bars, Tint, UHF, Scangauge, Aux batt (ABR kit), Cargo barrier, 50l water tank, Storage system, Elec brake con. ARB compressor

Thanks all
Just one comment, the cheapest I can get BFG 265 70 16 all terrains is $355 each, so there is a real price attractiveness to those in the $250 range, and 4 of the 6 BFGs I currently have wont balance well enough to go on the front without vibrating despite no apparent damage or weird wear patterns, so Im not keen to pay top dollar to risk going there again.

I purchased 6 x 265/75/16 Maxxis AT980 a couple of months back....Price was $250 each at my local Jaxx dealer. Have done just on 10000k with them, rotated them once. With a 6 tyre rotation, I should get some good klms out of them.
Performance wise, so far i cannot fault them. Did the Oodnadatta on them and took a few detours along the way, including Halligan Bay. That had some of the worst corrugations i have seen. Ran them at 25psi and no issues at all. No chipping, cracking, punctures. Road noise is there, but i can live with that, the old girl has a few rattles with 305k on the clock.98 GXL......
My build up
