Hi Every one I cannot attend the GTG. I am too embarrased to say why at this stage how ever I will not be able to attend, A strange thing has happened to me and I will regrettably not be able to participate. I have been looking forward to the GTG with much work and considerable dollars spent, however due to circumstances (not all bad) beyond my control I cannot come. I willl post the reason why I cannot attend later down the track when it hurts less. Thanks for the effort you have put in on our behalf. Hopefully my late withdrawal will not cause any problems. If there is any expenses already assigned I am more than happy to front up with my share. Good luck and good holiday.

    Regards Matt Ferguson

      Sorry to hear that Matt.

Hopefully the misfortune that has befallen you is of a temporary nature and you will be able to hit the trails again soon.

Thats not good news Boreman. hope all is well.

I did abit of a trip this last week. Went up to Steep Point. 1000K's one way.
Loaded the car and camper. loaded the new roofrack, the new fridge, set up the freezer slide in the camper, hit the road and the track.

All went well, But gee did the fuel economy go out the window. Only got 18lts per 100K. Our last trip across country toped out at about 16lts per 100K from memory. and that was dirt, sand action.

I am puting it down to 2 things. 1: The roof rack and enclosed luggage. and 2: the old girl is a bit older and might be loosing a bit of economy/ performance..?..

Just thought I would post this for others to gauge fuel usage if they have an old (non D4D) diesel. Or someone who has recently added a roofrack.

        Jeff.

p.s. Steep Point is a wild awesome place.
Reminds me of my safari in Africa. Somebody forgot the corkscrew and for several days we had to live on nothing but food and water.

Sorry to hear that Boreman I hope the embarrasement will pass soon?

Jeff,it's great you discovered that the fully loaded diesel only gets 18lts per 100km with roof rack and lift and bigger tires towing a trailer.
With that calulation aprox 6000km round trip.

          6000 / 100 = 60
          60 x 18 = 1080 lts

          1080lts x (possible average fuel price) $1.50 = $1620

What does a petrol get, about 20l per 100 fully loaded?Petrol may be more expensive in the middle?

I might have to drag a ATM behind me as well.

            Jeff,
I read an article a few years back and an unloaded roof rack uses 22% more fuel also spotties uses 12% I don't know where they got the figures from but scarry or what.

My D4D with roof-bars, spotties and lots of other stuff, has averaged 10.3 l/100kms since new. If that article was based on fact, then:

              Without roofbars: 8.4l / 100km
              Without spots: 7.5l /100kms

I guess you can't believe everything you read .

                Hi WA PPers,

Could any of you answer a couple of questions?

                1. Do we need to carry any wood for a fire? Like the bags you get at a servo.
                2. Petrol Prado's are any of you carrying gerry cans and if so how many?

                Thanks

                • Re: WA. trip to GTG 4th july 09

I reckon the 3 nights on the GCR will need a bit of a fire.

I'm saving a bit of roof rack space for either a bag of wood or some roadside collection.

The camper trailer currently has 120 L fuel and 120 L water - 6 fuel gerry cans, 3 water gerry cans and a 60 L water tank underneath.

                  Cheers

                    Steve,

Firewood is definitely a good idea. Most of the places we'll be stopped on the GCR allow campfires,
but it's a "bring your own wood" theme. (I'm not sure on the Laverton Caravan Park's policy on
campfires, but the roadhouses we'll be using along the GCR defintely do allow them). As you mentioned, I
usually throw a servo-bag of wood in the back of the truck.

As for jerry cans of fuel - well that's up to you. There is fuel available at Tjukajirla, Warburton and Warakurna
along the GCR, so approx 400km between fuel stops. All the roadhouses have both diesel and opal (BP unleaded
that isn't sniffable apparently). With the 180L of tank space there should be no issues.

Thanks for the info gentlemen. One other question the gerry cans do they have to be lockable or will the plastic with the screw cap do?

                      Cheers

Crikey I wish I'd waited and got a diesel now, the price of diesel fuel has dropped heaps since last year plus they are meant to be better for towing.

I'll probably take 2 Jerry cans of fuel just for emergencies.

                            Hi WA PPers.

I will be taking my birthday present with us, The OZPIG.

We get 2 nights out of 1, 18KG bag of wood. So we will take 3 bags with us. I noticed Bunnings have wood bags for $9.95. Cheaper than petrol stns.

And if we pull up and set up early enough the camp oven will come out for sure.... mmmmmmm

Only about 18 days to go.. whoooo hoooo...
