I'm sure Stewy wants to get his "new thing" all broken (in) before we get to the GTG. I was planning to head out with you from Nindigully on the Saturday morning. Will we head south for Lightning Ridge and the Darling instead now?
It's only the track from Innamincka to the lake that is closed isn't it? The Strzelecki Track, Cameron Corner etc are all open aren't they? Should still be plenty to see on the way.

        • The Stezlecki is a highway now and all weather road, if Bollards Lagoon is clear try and do the Bore Track it is a classic desert drive that has no traffic, nothing like driving for hours and not seeing another vehicle. Also the drive across the lagoon takes an amazing 30 minutes.

          Enjoy the trip, Richo.

          • I read today on another site that the owners of Bollards Lagoon station have stated that the Bore Track is permanently closed so probably time to pull out the maps again and get a back up plan into action.
Driving down via the Strzelecki doesn't excite me too much as it's basically a highway now and you can sit on 120 all day if you feel like it.

            • I'm just back from our trip today (will post more on that later) - from Innamincka you can drive down to Cameron Corner via Epsilon and Omricon Stations - a great drive through gibber plains and sand dunes.

I've got an idea, get the "Ranga Whisperer" to call Bollards Lagoon Station and put the Pradopoint story to them to try and get access. They actually have a voluntary donation box at the gate to the station. Also if you do get there have a look at the open shed he had some big time toys in there last time we were there.

See ya on the tracks, Richo.

                • Will be having a chat with OurdoorGaz tomorrow who's just returned from a 3 week trip out to Innamincka, Birdsville etc.
Will ask him about track conditions etc. and see what has to say.

                  cheers

                  • I have some updates... it's not very positive, I'm afraid.

I contacted the property owners at Bollard's Lagoon and they have decided to permanently, (i.e. forever-permanently), lock the gates . They don't want any more 4WD's through their property. Whilst they seemed reluctant to explain their decision, they mentioned some concerns that led to their decision. Apparently, there have been too many 4WD's through their property. The track is becoming dangerous because there are many blind corners and sandy dune crests with vehicles travelling in both directions. The track is dangerous, causing people to be bogged, and they felt the risk is no longer worth it. There is a risk of bush fires, as has been through there in recent times.

So the Bore Track is out. Bummer!

Coongie Lakes Track will be closed due to rain damage, at least until the end of 2012 and they expect into 2013. Bummer! Coongie Lakes is supposed to be the jewel in SA tourist destinations and I was especially looking forward to spending some time there.

The Strzelecki Track (from just South of Moomba to Arkaroola) has been closed since 9-July and expected to be closed for another day or two. From Innamincka or Cameron Corner, there is no practical way to reach Arkaroola when the Strz is closed. We'll have to keep an eye on this.

I'm a bit deflated by the closure of The Bore Track and Coongie Lakes. These were trip highlights and it has me thinking about other options now. I'm not sure there's enough at Innamincka alone (apart from Dig Tree) to make this route worthwhile.

                    Thoughts?

                    • Pity about Coongie Lakes.

Still happy to go that way via Dig tree and Camerons Corner - haven't been there before - and we would still end up at Arkaroola.

                      • What's the status of the Old Strzelecki Track down from Innamincka? Though going that way would require a bit of back-tracking into Camerons Corner and back out again on the merty merty road. The road down through Omicron looks like it could be interesting. Or you could go Innamincka - Old Strzelecki to where it joins the new track - across to Epsilon - Omicron - Camerons Corner.

I haven't done the sums but it's a shame we wouldn't have the time to head up to Birdsville and come down to Innamincka via the Public Access Route through Walkers Crossing, that looks like it could be good drive to do sometime.

Hopefully it stops raining out there before the GTG!

                        • Walkers Crossing track is closed until further notice due to flood damage.

The Old Strzelecki Track is currently closed due to rain but I presume it is only temporary. Similarly, the bore track north is closed due to recent rain. Is it likely to reopen before September?
