    • So I have a question about the stay at Talbotville. If my math is correct, we're there for 7 nights. If what I've read around the place is correct, it's a very basic campsite with only two toilets. So, I've grouped some thoughts/questions below.

      1) Water: What do the committee recommend re water supplies given we're there 7-odd days. I know this depends a lot on the individual, and those of us with Campers with kitchens etc need to factor this excess water in. I know there's a river there, so is that water good quality for cleaning etc? Would it need to be filtered? In other words, is it murky like the Murray River

      2) Showers: This is not so much a question for me but for the Mrs, and probably all the other Mrs' out there. I'm pretty sure SWMBO won't enjoy not showering for 7 days. So, is there anywhere around that we can get a shower (some places you can pay for a shower etc). Alternatively, I can bring a ensuite tent and portable shower, but this affects water supplies - refer to note 1 above

Good job it is not in the South China Sea or it would be surrounded by warships, seems to be hot property. If we keep a map with us showing it is outside the park then gen-sets will not be banned by Parks.
Its ok Barra, Lea is navigating so I will probably end up in NSW, are Gens banned there too?

Weather At that time of year???
Could be fine sunny and mid to high 20's or low teens with a biting wind and thats just on the first day.
Expect low single figures or possible minuses at night especially if clear, no matter how warm the day.
Complete with a Mocca sunset framed by white froth clouds? (How am I doing, assimulating is not easy)

            • In general I would not drink the water unless very high up in the mountains without treating it these days.
As for washing and cleaning with it, that should be ok. heat it to be sure.
I now take some betadine and add 1 drop/lt and know that I have killed any bugs when using the local stream water in Victoria.
Not sure how pure the Talbotville water is. Gardia is finding its way in to most of Australias rivers.

              • Is it worth packing the fishing rod, any chance of catching trout in the rivers?

If you don't usually catch a trout you'r not likely to here either but if you a chance sure, there are plenty of flowing streams.

1- There is plenty of water in the rivers and it is usually free of dissolved solids so suitable for showers and clothes washing (if you have to) and you could wash dishes with it. If you are worried about bacteria, you could boil it first. No the water here will never be confused with Murray water. To help keep it that way showers and dishwater must not be discharged within twenty metres of the streams and definitely no soap taken to the water.

2- An En-suite tent with a roof, 12v shower pump a bucket and large saucepan and you are set up. We have been using this setup for fifteen years and it is a better shower than most caravan parks. If want to spend more money, buy a 12v pump and 25m of hose and one of those gas hot-water units or a heat ex-changer in the Prado and she can shower until her skin is washed off.

The Vic high country is a great place for trout fishing!
Tassie is the only place that is arguably better?
Tonnes of water to fish & catch trout. That being said I've never fished the river at Talbotville, I'd say there would be fish in it, but you would need to be away from the river crossings. If you were up early to Mansfield there are plenty of choices of close by places to fish.
Lake Eildon at bonnie doon, howqua river/inlet, Jamieson river/ inlet, delatite river, they all run into Eildon.
So if you are a keen fisho, get down early.
Also if your keen it would be worth a spin in the wonnangatta, a very nice river which produced trout last November.
So yes plenty of water around & not enough time to fish it, a bit like the tracks, so many & not enough time......
I'm not the trout guru, but I know him, happy to give some tips to anyone that is keen & less experienced.
If there is enough maybe there will be a fish'n trip......?

                      • Got a fly rod bring it along. I will be. spinning and bait also good in most of our streams and rivers. Brown and rainbows are plentiful in most mountain rivers.
I have not fished Talbotville, but plenty on the other side. April is getting late in the season but if still warm the bugs will still be giving plenty of dawn and dusk action on the water.

                        • Thanks #### & Chris. I have never been trout fishing before & don't own a fly rod however I am a keen fisho and I thought the opportunity of pulling a trout out of a high country stream would be too good to pass up. Might have to put the rod and some lures on the list, just in case we get a chance for a sneaky fish

                          Cheers Matt

                              • Been doing some trip planning for after the GTG and was wondering if anyone could tell me what the road is like from Dargo heading north to Harrietville? Would it be suitable to tow a camper trailer on?
