Hypothetically speaking...
If someone couldn't make it in time to get to Mansfield but headed straight to Talbotville... what's the most direct route from the north? ... and would they be allowed to attendCheers, Leon
There's no such thing as a wrong turn... it's just the scenic route!

Hi All,
Is there a need for a Satellite Phone, given that there is poor or no reception at Tabotville?
If so, would a small cost of $10.00 per vehicle be acceptable? Based on 40 Vehicles = $400.00
$10.00 is a small price to pay, to have it on standby, incase of something more serious happens.
This would be just to cover the loan of the unit for the duration of the GTG.
This would be on loan to me from my local 4wd Club, and I think its only right that if we borrow it, we chip in some cost for having it.
Any calls would be extra $3.00/30 secs.
Please advise

I'm pretty sure there will be at least 1 in the group & we can get Telstra to work in an emergency.

Hi All,
What Price would you be prepared to pay per vehicle?
Do realise that these unit cost the other side of $1,000?
Plus any repairs would be approx $200.00 min.
Relying on someone else to have one is really fraught with danger!!!
Better to know someone has one available now, than waiting until we are there to find out there isn't one?
I hope and pray we don't need to use it, but better to have one than not.
But if you want to go down that path, thats on your head as organisers.
You guys have done the reccies, you know where the coverage is, we don't.
This should be one of the first things to look at as part of your risk management.

I have not seen the prado point gtg risk management plan. Not sure if there is one.
Life is full of risks & if anyone thinks they need a sat phone They can calculate their own risk & have their own. Without sounding too smart, what I mean is with this safety stuff, where does it end? Should we make sure attendees are only coming from thousands of miles away have 5 star safety vehicles?
The committee members would reccomend safe practises, but are not experts in risk management.
If anyone has concerns about this, perhaps they will reconsider attending?
If you have concerns about the safety of this gathering, which is a fair call, Perhaps your 4x4 club would let you bring it along to use only in emergencys? We surely would appreciate their gesture if they did.

I will have my sat phone with telstra on the Iridium network with me, if anyone has an emergency they can use it so long as they pay for the calls, oh and they have to tell me what a great bloke I am and maybe buy me a beer, except I don't drink, so don't worry about the beer.
Anyone calling the sat phone from a telstra phone it is only the same charge as any mobile call, so calling out and asking for someone to call back can work out pretty cheap.
I need to get a new mic for my HF, hopefully that is sorted by the GTG and we will have double coverage.
