  • New Prado dilemma

First things first... hi all, this is my first post on pradopoint. I've been reading through heaps of threads here and have found heaps of great stuff for a potential Prado owner like myself.

I'm currently driving a VZ SS 6 Litre ute and am about to jump ship to Toyota and my first 4WD!

The plan is to go for a new GXL D4D and most likely auto at this stage pending a test drive. Mainly going for the diesel for the torque (coming from a V8 is going to make it hard to compromise on torque) and also the added benefit of great fuel economy which is something I'm not a custom to. From what I've been reading on this forum is that my 6L is on a par consumption wise with the V6.

Anyway the problem is I've found a second hand 2006 Petrol VX for around the $46k mark with relatively low k's. Now, although it's a petrol and around 12 months old I can't help but think it's a ripper deal considering a new VX retails for around $68k. I'm at the point where I'm completely torn and need some advice from you guys in the know.

In regards to the wait on the diesel, I am happy to wait till early next year for delivery so that shouldn't be a problem.

Any help would be much appreciated!

    Cheers,

    Steve

Mate that's a decision that only you can make.

I too went from 20 years of V8 and V6 Commodores just before easter this year and stepped into my first ever fourby.

I was a bit torn between diesel for towing and petrol ... 'cause I've still got a 98 octane habit. Then I had the chance to pick up an 03 GXL, just the way I wanted it, for the right price.

The right price also meant I would have to look at the older diesels and not the D4D .... decision made .. went with petrol ... and haven't regretted it.

I also know that the next one (a few years away yet) will be a diesel ....
twin turbo .... 650 Nm ....

Hey chippy thanks for the response.

I do have my heart set on the D4D but for around 10-15k less than a GXL would I be mad not to take up the VX? Do you think it's a good price for a 2006?

There are other advantages to petrol Prados too, no grotty diesel bowser to park in front of when you have a monkey suit on, on your way to a wedding.............

I would suggest taking them for a test drive, take both petrol and D4D. The V6 is not short on torque and still pulls a decent load in comfort.
At the end of the day if you can get a ripper deal on a petrol it will take a long time to recoup the difference in price compared to the extra fuel consumption.
Everyone has a different argument between the V6 and D4D, they are both great motors. Go with what suits your requirements best I say. 8) Good luck with it.

Mate ... that $22,000 you save will buy an aweful lot of petrol and accessories.

IMHO that's a lot of years of fun while you figure out exactly what you want before forking out a larger sum.

Had it been a commodore ... I would have known exactly what I was after. Being new to fourbys I wasn't even sure how much use (off road) it was going to get ... I just needed to drag the camper trailer around and fit the whole family in comfortably. This is myproject toy ... and by the time I'm ready to swap it I will have tested heaps of bits and know exactly what I'm going to be using it for and what I want on it.

            Enjoy your choice, either way.

Depends on how many k's and what extra's. But I would say its a pretty good price. If you compare with car yard prices from the couple I just looked at online to compare, they varied from $54-58k.

                Hi Steve

I'm in a similar boat as your good self.

If you go the used car route, the VX seems like a reasonable buy. You'll be saving heaps of money and that means lots of spare change for those fuel bills. It's a no brainer decision for me, if you're happy going used... get the VX!!!

On the other hand, if you go the GXL, test drive both engine options but I would say that the petrol V6 is still a good buy if you aren't going to keep it forever. Don't forget, you are paying a premium for the D4D option and maintenance costs will be higher for the diesel over a range of 150,000km. The diesel might work out slightly cheaper but not by much.

On the other hand, if you will be doing a lot of towing then the diesel is a wise choice.

Good luck whatever you decide. I'm following in your footsteps.

                  Steve,
"Decisions", "Decisions', the more you look the harder it all becomes.

As all the earlier post's have said:- Sounds like a good buy?

Which leads me to the point of resale????
I would suggest at present the D4D would entertain a higher resale value.

The v6 is still a great vehicle.

I stepped from a 5 litre V8 Commodore to the D4D & have been pleasantly surprised at the pulling power & exceptional economy

I would as others have suggested (Test drive both)

It looks as if you may have a few more restless nights :?

I faced this exact situation in the last two weeks. The lease on my VY SS was ending in November & I wanted a GXL D4D. Every dealer I visited quoted me between $57K & $58.5K driveaway.

On Friday while out visiting clients I spotted a 2006 V6 Grande at a Toyota dealer. Pulled in and had a look and it was in excellent condition. They were asking $58990. After some tough talk I had them down to $53K and they valued my trade in @ $23K when all the dealers that I got quotes off for the new D4D were only offering me $18K trade in.

The rest is history Picked it up the next day and what a fantastic car !!

After doing approx 300k's over the weekend the average fuel usage was about 12l per 100k's, my VY SS was averaging 14.5 per 100k's.

Although I would have loved the diesel, the petrol is great. Quite, smooth & really comfortable. And having a petrol motor means I can keep getting my wife to keep her fuel receipts and add them into my costs for % of business use. I figure that yes the D4D is going to have better resale but when your buying at these kind of prices like the VX mentioned above how can you lose ???

                    Regards
                    Dan

The petrol vs diesel is an interesting debate wilst petrol is so cheap here is yes thats right petrol is very cheap here due to an oversupply of unleaded fuel.
The same can't be said for diesel which is in high demand and at a premium price for what it is.
The real question is how long will this situation last, the people who know the answer to this aren't telling.
Petrol has been cheaper for quite a few years but it won't last forever, if this was a european site there would be question that diesel is the only choice because diesel is about 75% of the price of petrol.
So grab a bargain petrol Prado and enjoy it while lasts and maybe you could do a gas conversion if you don't need a lot of range.

The petrol has heaps of torque. I tow around my 5.5m boat to places like Cardwell, Lucinda and Mission Beach and the GXL petrol does it easy. I sit on 95k/h so I'm not forever having to pass others but if I put the foot down the rig gets going fast. Fuel usage kicks up from around 11.5 to 19 l/100k. What the hell, it's only money.

The considerable saving will certainly cover the added fuel consumption. As long as you are happy to pay an extra $50 - $60 per 1000km in fuel then it's probably a no brainer. Borrowing the lump sum over a longer period is a little different to having to budget for the added fuel costs week by week.

I have had my D4D for a few weeks now and I too have gone from a V8 SS to my first 4WD and I will never look back. Heaps of power and tows with no effort. As for smelly diesel pumps?? with a 180 litre fuel tank who cares.

I've sworn to myself that I'd never buy another petrol powered four wheel drive.

Sure $22K is a big savings now, but let's look at resale in 4 years time. You'll see that the diesel will hold it's value far better comparatively.

Anyway, if you don't plan to do any outback trips, and live in Victoria, fit an LPG system to the V6 VX and save lots of money!
