What you think a diesel model will have $22K better resale than its petrol equivalent ???

You need to re-do your figures.

Whoa! So many replies, thanks heaps for all the great comments!

Looks like I may have been a bit slow off the mark to grab the VX! Damn it!! Anyhow sh!t happens.

Now I rang my local Toyota dealer up here and managed to get a new GXL auto diesel to punt around in until tomorrow, bloody great service if you ask me.

The car is absolutely fantastic, being a Toyota it's very typical of what I was expecting. Awesome comfort levels compared to the SS. It's so smooth on the road and if you hit a pothole you get to keep your teeth and hardly feel anyting. There is one thing I'm not all that impressed with though and thats the auto...

I'm not sure whether it's this particular car but I've found the shifts not very smooth at times almost to the point where you physically get a bit of a jerk.

Also it kicks in to 5th or locks up at relatively slow speeds and there seems to be a slight vibration or what seems like the engine is labouring until you get closer to 100km/h. If I drop it back to 4th the noise disapears.

And lastly the lack of engine breaking at slow speed. I drove up a very steep hill no problems whatsoever but coming down I had to use my brakes the whole way even when putting it into L2.

I think the manual might be the go for me.

But apart from all that it's a great package, in fact I'm about to go for another cruise.

      Cheers! :P

Sounds like it has an issue? Mine is so smooth you dont even notice the changes sometimes unless your looking at the tacho.

my Auto is smooth too, but it's a V6. I wonder of the D4D/Auto combo isn't as smooth, I can believe that as my father-in-laws manual D4D GXL is much 'rougher' than my V6 GXL.

In fact, I wonder if people claiming the D4D goes like a 'rocket' have been in in a V6, cause from my experience with his manual, my V6 must be a 'ballistic missile'. How much of that is 'feel' due to the high reving Auto versus low reving Manual I'm not sure as we haven't actually lined up next to each other! Might have to do that one day when he's not watching!

                Cheers, Nige

Crammy - when I got my GXL early 2005 they were scarse. Tried in Townsville - Mike Carney is a golf mate of mine - but no good - 3 month wait and low trade. Then went to the Cairns dealer and he was sympathetic but no car for months and the deal wasn't good either. Drove past this tiny dealership in Innisfail and there was 2 brand new Prados sitting in the show room. Saturday arvo and he was closed. Called Monday, yep, for sale, just got them in, and we cut a deal over the phone. Fantastic service. When I picked the car up he loaded on seat covers, driving lights, plastic tyre cover (the expensive one), window tinting at no extra charge. I was gob-smacked. Great little dealership in a beautiful part of the world.

                    I'm assuming L2 means low range 2nd.....

In that case if you are using the brakes & you don't want too, you should have tried low range 1st.

You will find that 2nd gear in the auto is a fair bit taller gear ratio than 2nd in a manual.

Can you try the same slope again but in 1st?

                    Cheers

G'day clifton, I hear there is a shipment of Prado's due in 2nd week in Nov too. They're organising a spin in a manual petrol and diesel.

I'm only new to Cairns so don't know many good spots to go for a bit of an offroad cruise. Can you recommend any good offroad places to go 4wding close to Cairns?

It was quite disapointing to say the least, it would also surge on the downshifts at times too. As it was a demo maybe it had been flogged, I dunno.

Hey Nige, I'm looking forward to taking a petrol for a spin, I wouldn't say the diesel I drove was a rocket, seemed fairly quick up to 100km/h for a diesel but I don't think I would feel confident overtaking in certain situations. (But I guess I've been spoilt)

Hey whitman, I guess it all depends on the salesman, I have heard a few people say the same thing about the Cairns dealer but I think I must have been lucky. They are talking about a very reasonable figure for my trade
to the point where I'd be crazy to sell privately. I'll also be a fleet purchase so that'll keep them honest.

Hi StormyKnight, L2 was the lowest I could shift down to in the auto, LR would have been overkill for this particular hill.

Fuel consumption to me is not really an issue cost wise, but the extended range of a diesel does appeal to me. I guess I'll be able to comment more on this in a few weeks time!

I bought a D4D GXL in July this year and am very pleased. It has heaps of power on and off road. Fuel economy is good as well.

The new common-rail diesel seems to be the way to go. I agree with others that in future years there will be a better re-sale on the diesels.

A Toyota dealer told me that the next batch of Landcruisers will be all diesel, no petrol model available. I assume then that in future years there will only be diesel Prados available.
