  • Differences between 150 series GXL & Kakadu models

Apart from the fancy trim and upholstery what are the major differences between the GXL and Kakadu variants in the 150 series? I'm coming from a 90 series VX which was the model below the Grande, was hoping to get into something with a similar spec list. I'll probably be buying used as the new price is way over my budget.

Go to redbook.com.au. Click on the Compare tab. Then select the cars you want to compare. When the results come out, tick the Show Differences on the left hand side.

Had a look at the comparison and as I suspected it's mainly the fancy stuff like the sound system and electric seats that differ. I've found a 2009 Kakadu and a 2010 GXL at different dealers with similar K's. The Kakadu has a $64K price tag but it does have a bullbar as well as all the usual fruit. The GXL has a $50K price tag but no bullbar. The question is whether all the fruit on the Kakadu is worth an extra $14K and my head tells me it isn't.

A GXL 150 would have heaps more fruit than a VX 90.

If you like the interior of the Kakadu but don't like the price consider the Altitude. Mine was just under 65K Brand spanking new. It has the same seat(but not electric), same Sunroof same DVP and Stereo system.

Suspension is better on the Kakadu and it has a few other bits and pieces. Just rembember that LCT kicks in after the GXL hence a third of the extras are actually just tax.

Suspension and the traction control dial is the main thing to look at. The rest are just luxury items, but the KDSS suspension can have issues with lifting etc.

I did have - 2010 GXL D4D Auto, ARB bullbar, rails, sliders, winch, 40mm lift, Brown Davis bash plates and long range tank

In what way? The VX was just below the Grande in terms of features and the GXL was just above the base RV IIRC. I was assuming the 150 series would follow the same pattern but am happy to be educated if things have changed..

Which one has the KDSS suspension?

The GXL has climate control, traction, stability control, DAC, trip computer. I am not 100% sure but does the VX 90 have any of this?
I know my 120 GXL had no of this gear.

The VX has the dual aircon (so separate controls for the 2nd row, etc), and traction control but no LSD. Mine has a trip computer in the odometer display. Looking at the list comparing all 3 cars there are lots of gaps in the VX list but then it was built 10 years ago too.

Fido, I know I was surprised how much more it had from the 120 GXl, the 150 had climate across all three rows, full electronic trip computer, the traction and Down hill assist r amazing how well they work off road.
Anyhow if u can afford it the kaka would be a great ride, if a 50k GXL is more appealing I am sure u will not be disappointed and have heaps of change for mods.

first time poster... I am also trying to decide what level of spec best suits me.
I have attached one of the pages from the brochure, which is a really good summary of the spec levels.

                          Hi Fido

If you are going to put a lift or different suspension stay away from the KDSS there are numerous posts on this forum about issues trying to mod suspension. You can buy a lot of goodies for 14k, you could even install the TJM (or ARB) catalogue like Hutch did
(sorry Hutch couldn't help myself )

I had a 90 series before this you won't know yourself, also the LSD is not required with the traction control which works an absolute treat.

See ya on the tracks, Richo.

I used the comparison tool on Redbook.com.au as I could list the models side by side. BTW, I went with the Kaka in the end (used not new), we pick it up on Friday.

ETA: Hi Richoson we must have been posting at the same time. I do get your point but in the end the Kaka won as it had about a year's less K's on it (based on the average K's we've done over the 10 years we've owned the 90). The difference between the 2 ended up being only ~$10K once the price was negotiated down. Considering the tyres, bar and UHF cover about $4.5K of that, the GXL looked like less of a bargain.

What parts of the seats in a Kakadu are supposed to be leather? Reason I'm asking is because when I was detailing my Kakadu (remember I have the 09 model) last weekend the sides of the seats appeared to be vinyl because I could see some foam backing poking out of the back of one of the seats. I haven't treated the leather yet but I've purchased a Mothers product that has the cleaner and conditioner combined and I'm not sure if it's vinyl safe.
