I like how Brighton Toyota list their stock on the web site plus they seem to carry petrol and diesel for each badge to show punters.

I've found that most Melbourne Toyota dealers list their stock, it's tied in with CarSales.com.au somehow.

The end of month is the one of the best times as many sales guys/lgirls are are on spiffs.
End of Jan or end of June I have found to always be very good. Dont leave it to the last day as you options may be limited. Give yourself a few days. And if you cant get the deal you want (as long as it is reasonable), walk away.

In the past I have asked to see the sales manager in his office, to say hello and I am interested in a car etc. ( also cuts out all the BS of "I have to ask my manager" that they will try to use on you) The sales manger invariably have a whiteboard up behind them with the sales guys and their numbers for the month. I quickly look and I then try and hunt down the sales guy with the lowest number for the month as they will be the most keen to do a deal. All fair in love and war I say.
        cheers

I wonder if the face lift due in 2013 will have much of an impact, (dealer here suggested it might have 6 speed auto).

Is there an update in 2013, other threads are suggesting not?

Toyota have got dealers to register a whole bunch of 2012 vehicles including Prado's and are currently offering fairly good deals. They are calling them demos but most have no klms on them. Around $58000 seems to be the going price in Vic for a GXL. I couldn't get a zero klm TD auto in white so bought the sales managers demo which is 2 months old for a couple of grand less. Happy with that

There seems to be good deals also in Qld at the moment with depending on the model, savings in the order of $5k to $10k below NSW and Vic dealers.

I rang for quote with a Brisbane dealer and the sales guy said he can arrange for it have NSW rego instead of Qld which is bonus. All deals quote Drive away no more to pay.

                Am I missing something here?

Most new vehicle purchases would include Commonwealth GST and additional luxury car tax (depending on the model) plus a State sales tax. If all dealers have a similar base price from Toyota plus the tax levies above are of comparable rates, then there ought not be such a huge difference in prices across states.

Is it simply dealers making such huge profits per unit they can afford to drop a lazy $10k on a $70k vehicle to get them out the door? Or has Qld abolished sales tax?

                Thanks guys.

The best time usually is at the end of each month, this is because the dealer is trying to reach sales targets, if you go to one dealer and they wont budge on a price or give freebees as part of the deal, usually means they have reached their monthly target, so you then move onto another dealer and try again, you will find one or two that havent reached their target.

Croozza's right. Within each month the sales staff are usually expected to sell 15 vehicles each. That's the target. This is a combination of new and used for car yards which sell both. This is more realistic at some car yards than others depending on the competition that's around. They get a base wage of approx $23-25,000 for a 58 hour week, week in week out. 8am to 6pm Mon-Fri and 8am-4pm Saturday. If you don't show up to work you don't get paid. You're allowed one week day off per month. It can be a Saturday if you've reached your target of 15 cars for the month already, but if you're sales target is down forget about having a day off. Your a**hole boss won't let you have the time off and would make you sorry for asking if you wanted it off anyway. The commission of each vehicle sold for the sales person is approx $60 per vehicle give or take from car yard to car yard regardless of whether it's new or used. They get a bonus of up to $500 if they sell 10 "new" cars for the month, and up to $1,000 for 15 cars sold for the month. If they sell 10 new cars for the month as part of the 15 the bonus can be up to the $2,000 mark for that alone. But it basically never happens unless you work for a really busy dealership. Go to a car yard at the end of the month and you'll have more bargaining power than at any other time.... Or here's another tip... If it's been drizzling for a week or more with no end in sight. Go to a yard and buy your car during the rain. They don't sell many cars to private buyers when it's raining because buyers don't want to get wet. They'll go to great lengths to sell a vehicle in the rain when it's been drizzling for ages.

If the sales person does drop the price (and both new and used have separate buffers the sales person can play with), but if he drops the price by more than the buffer, usually his commission is reduced as a result to deter this and to maximize the dealership's profits on future sales. The sales person would be reminded of this by his boss every time he does this which wouldn't be often. I've heard the sales managers at dealerships are often hard-nosed pricks behind closed doors towards their sales staff to eliminate complacency and keep the salesmen afraid of falling short of their targets.

Thanks Croozza & Brett for the insight on the workings of car dealerships. Hopefully the sods doing the actual selling at least gets a good discount as the $'s sounds piss poor incentive! Almost felt sorry for them, then woke up to myself.

Sounds like you're on the money about targets, had 2 dealers ring this week as follow up on a visit I made with them before Xmas. Spied some banners laying around the office at one yard as if they were preparing for an upcoming Sale.

They can't be that desparate to sell. Mate went in to the local dealer intent on buying a new 4by. He was yet to make up his mind whether to get a Hilux or a Prado but was swaying towards the Prado. He was hoping the dealer could help him out with a good deal to make the purchase of a new GXL happen. But they just weren't that interested. He ended up walking across the road and bought a Ford Ranger instead.

Thought I'd share this AND I dont work for the company, nor have shares nor get a kick back.

I used "Private Fleet Sales" to buy mine...you pay a small join fee (it was about $110) and they then "shop your deal" around.

I had a trade in, so it was just a changeover for me.......they "shopped" my Prado and trade at 260 dealers and the dealers then "bid" for the Business.

After 72 hours (and about 30 bids) I got the lowest changeover price BUT then asked them to try and get a Bullbar and Towbar thrown in......I got the bar for free and the towbar at half price, all negotiated by someone else (how easy was that).

Compared to walking down to my local Toyota Dealer (which I did) the difference was about $8000 (value of bar and saving on towbar included)

                            AND

Apart from e-mails never had to spend a cent on travel or waste the time to go and see dealers!!

                            Sweet as!!

I just picked up my GXL TD in Brisbane for $57700. It was a demo with Zero K's, part of a demo promotion.
I added a factory Tow Bar and Tint then down to Northfield for an Eclipse Audio/GPS Upgrade.
