  • Buying used high ks

Guys after a bit of advice. Tossing up between Pajero and prado. Aiming to spend about 15k which seems to get 250k kms 120 series petrol. I would like to keep it for a few years as I have a young family
    So my questions are
Is 250k too much on the petrol motor? What could I reasonably expect out of these motors?
Is lpg something to weigh into purchase as I've heard the 4l is thirsty?
What should I look out for aside for the usual fluids etc when inspecting?

    Thanks for your help

250 is nothing. Rings have just bedded in

Prado's are incredibly well put together. My 2004 has 240k on it and is as tight as a drum.

Yep 250 is bugger all these days
Earlier this year I had a 90 v6 with just shy of 600k it only then seized but may have been from neglect from the previous owner
      There built to last
Biggest killer of them is oil leaks ! Oil kills everything all the rubbers wiring

I bought my 04 120 diesel with 225k on it. I don't think petrol would be much different.

Regular service and fix things when they need doing and you should be good mate

Thanks guys. What should I look for at inspection? Any common problems with 120 series and the 4l?

From memory, need to keep an eye on feedback values from about the 80k mark.

I saved this from a previous thread for reference:

              Injection volume
The total amount of fuel being injected into the cylinders. Output is in cubic millimeters per stroke.

              Reference: 5-12 mm3/st (Idle)

              Injection Feedback value
The amount of compensation or correction of fuel being injected into cylinders 1 to 4. A positive value indicates fuel is being added, and a negative value means fuel is being reduced. Output is in cubic millimeters per stroke.

              Reference: +/- 3 mm3/st (Idle)

I did the cold start test on mine a couple of months ago - it was sitting on around 105 then:

              Inj Cold = -1.1 / 1.0 / -0.4 / 0.1
              Inj Hot = -0.2 / 0.3 / 0.1 / -0.7

              Vol Cold = 10.37
              Vol Hot = 6.32

                just saw this,

Shodown are those figures you posted for the D4D?
how do you measure the injectors? SST or doable with a multimeter?

Everything is running fine with my D4D, no unusual rattle but would like to test for piece of mind.

Yes, these are D4D. Not sure if the same for pre-D4D or not....

Someone recently said they had seen the Toyota AUS guidance notes and 150 D4D is upto +/- 5mm where the 120 D4D is +/- 3mm - personnally I will be playing it safe an changing when it starts approaching 2.5mm

Refer to the techstream thread for info - you need a cable that plugs into OBD2 port.

                  It was around $30 delivered.

My understanding these apply to D4D only. The pre-D4D doesn't have the same issues (though those injectors will need replacing at somepoint too as they are consumables but are way cheaper ~$400 for a full set vs $1200 for D4D)

My local diesel place said they start to see rough running from about 2.5 in the 120 D4D's. I changed mine out around 100,000km when one was 2.7 and one was 2.4, others were in the mid 1's. #1 injector had sat around 2.4 for months but then #3 jumped from 1 to 2.4 over a couple of mths and vol was sitting around 18mm. Figured discretion was the better part of valour.

Haven't run the techstream over it since, probably should but its only been 5K since they were done.

                      Sorry for thread hijack
I have ordered the tech stream cable.

So just to clarify the Inj Cold / Hot reading
you want to be as close to 0 as possible and as soon as you get to + or - 2.5 look at replacing?

                      what about volume?
anything between 5-12 (mm3/st ) is what your looking for?

Thanks for the heads up - I'll do a cold start over the weekend as I last did mine around 105k and I am hitting 115k.
