    Hi All - I am new to the forum and see there is a heap of interesting articles.... have recently purchased a 2012 model and I read that you need to look at the intended use of your rig before you sink any real "hard earned cash" on stuff you probably don't really need. So I ask this - if I am a tourer / family camper type 70% tar and 30% unsealed roads, would I benefit from fitting a snorkel ? I like the tjm one - looks very tidy... also what is meant by 150 facelift ??

    Firstly welcome to the forum where you will find so much inspiration to spend lots of money.

    I have a 2009 from new and yet to fit a snorkel. Would you or do you need one you ask? IMO the simple answer is yes. Simply its cheap insurance. Motor rebuilds can 20k or more these days.

    You mention driving on unsealed roads. They often lead to water crossings that may make you think twice if you don't have a snorkel. Also the intake is away from the dust generated by your vehicle so it breaths cleaner and your filter will last longer. In a convoy situation you can get pre cleaner socks but always best to hang back away from the dust.

    I have used my vehicle in many 4wding situations and have held back occasional due to water depth. I will fit one before I go on an extended trip if I ever have the time.

    My choice is the Safari as the head can be turned 180 deg away from the dust. Not as slick looking but functional and I certainly don't mind the look, I guess its personal.

    150 face lift was in more recent times and another PP would better explain what changes where made other than the daytime driving lights.

        Facelift refers to the MY14 model update. The face of the car was changed with new grill, lights, bumper, tail lights and various equipment upgrades inside. There was a change to the front geometry for better steering feel off centre on the highway and revised dampers for slightly better ride and handling.

        Just a run of the mill mid life update really.

              Whether you would you benefit from a snorkel is hard to say, would a snorkel be a good thing? Yes! Do you NEED a snorkel? Probably not!

              There are generally considered to be 2 reason to fit a snorkel.

              1. Reduced dust in the intake. If you are in convoy or traffic and you use a pre filter over the head of the snorkel then you will keep your air filter much cleaner, if you don't use a pre filter then I am not really convinced the benefit from a snorkel is worth the expense if that's your only reason for fitting one. You can buy a lot of new air filters before you cover the cost of a snorkel and fitting one on its own only improves the dust intake by a bit, it doesn't eliminate the issue.

              2. Water crossings. Shallow water crossings your not going to get an advantage, but once you get into deeper crossings is when you will be glad you spent the money.

              Honestly the only modification most new 4wdrives "need" in order to get on the trails is a compressor and a tyre gauge, even then if the trails are well graded then you can get away without. Everything after that will depend on how far you are going to push things.

              I would hit the tracks and see what you find for yourself, check your filter after a day out and see what you reckon, if you conclude that its sucking in way too much dust then maybe spend the coin. Likewise if you find yourself turning around due to deep water and no snorkel, but you really want to give it a go then you know its a good idea for you to get one.

              Of course if money is no issue then just get one of everything

                Snorkel yes if you are on unsealed roads. I have inspected my air filter vs friends who don't have snorkels and was very surprised as mine was clean as a whistle. My dad also did his first major trip without one but was amazed at the difference second time round when he did have one.

                        If I break this down it would be as follows:
                        if money was no issue then get one of everything, great advice....
                        Next , hit the trails... Will have a peek at the filter at the beginning of the day and then at the end, if its dusty then the snorkel would move up the list of priorities. If I hit a shallow water crossing or 2 then it moves up the list again.
                        If I find that I start looking for deep water crossings and repeatedly hit dusty trails then yes I will out lay the cash and just get one.......
                        At the moment the Prado is a new toy - I get need to get out there get it dirty and see where I end up. Realistically I will not need a snorkel for now. Especially at $733.00

                          $733 isn't a lot when you think about how much an engine is, or the inconvenience of hydro-locking it

                          But you can also do it for a lot cheaper, I just fitted a Safari snorkel to my 120

                          Safari Snorkel $400 ish
                          Holesaw and Arbor $90
                          8mm drill bit $20
                          Step drill set $10

                          I already had a drill and also tools, the hardest bit was drilling the first hole in really good paint

                          So for around $500 I am happy that my intake is as high as practically possible

                            Had a TJM Snorkel fitted yeasterday $597 fitted. TJM have a 20% discount going at the moment.

                              I had a Safari fitted for $700. My gals love it, they think it's a submarine. Originally, I wanted the low profile look from Airtec but I have read so many good reports about the Safari from all all over the world (not just Pradopoint) which I cannot ignore and hence the reason why I went for the Safari.

                              If you are going to do a lot of deep water crossing and live in the outback, I would get one. I got one installed because I wanted one and it gave the fourby an aggressive feel to it. If I didn't get one I would've bought myself a PS4 with some games and a number of control pads.
