I dont like the Paj, they look terrible. i have the 1kz and it's been a very reliable car, not much goes wrong with them and are cheaper to service over the 1kd.

For me it came down to my budget for the car and after purchase maintenance costs. I couldn't afford the injector replacement every 100k on 1kd and possibly a motor rebuild down the track.

The 1kz has had some issues with the heads cracking but thats it and a very small %

    good luck with it

What are you going to do with it? How much towing? How much off road?
Pajero has 3000kg towing capacity, Prado 2500.
Pajero has independent rear suspension, Prado had Live axle rear. The purists will tell you live axle is better off road. But choose your lines carefully and adjust your driving and it's still a very capable vehicle.
Not sure about load carrying differences.

You'll probably get more gizmos on the Pajero for less money.

But I think Mitsibushis are overly complicated and pain to fix. I've also never known an older mitsi that doesn't leak oil. I've never owned a Paj but I'll never own another mitsi. Entirely subjective I know but those are my feelings

Test drove all 3 yesterday and was surprised with how much power the pajero had, but the built quality was poor. Had to use two hands to put the gear stick from P to D lol

Will definitely get a Prado though, my mind says 1KZ but heart says 1KD

Yes if you buy a 1KZ you'll possibly (just??) end up doing this ~ 2k modification, to give you a more enjoyable/realistic 21st century driving experience! I never thought I'd chip mine but don't look back now (on factory conservative setting). It may knock the last 50k longevity off the vehicle engine but hey, you enjoyed yourself. Injectors every ~100K for the 1KD for similar coin and better fuel consumption. Can't comment on the Mitsi as I've never owned one.

Same issue with injectors on Mitsi!

I have the 1KZ and it was what the budget set.
Love but havnt driven a 1KD to compare.
Of coarse it should be better but the potential expensive repaires scare me.
I fitted a 3" exhaust and the best thing i ever did.
will be looking to do a snorkel to give it some colder cleaner air.

                    Hi Macaroon 1,
Question I have been asking on PP, what exhaust and chip did you put on your 1kz ? I want a bit more power for towing ,was also thinking of the NT Pajero at one time,
It has I think 441 nm torque and rightups make it more economical but think my 06 1kz is built more solid so sticking with it and going to do the exhaust and chip
So what did you put in and how do you find it? Also your economy, don't do any bush bashing just bush camping.
                    Cheers Alan.

I bought a D4D, can't beat the power and economy of it.
I did say Pajero has lots of power but its no where near to how a 1KD engine delivers it.

I drove the 1KZ and yes they do have benefits of being bush friendly but the Prado is too heavy for it.

Alan..Beaudesert 2.75" mandrel bent performance exhaust from dump pipe, straight through muffler with egt port. I was extremely happy with just this set up. I was never going to chip it however a second hand Steinbauer one came up on PP, the guy offered to fit it and I was feeling good about life ( so did not pay full RRP). I believe I beat Mumsrig to it?? The exhaust alone offered more power from standing start and the Chip seems to hold the power better on Highway. In all the threads I've never come across a 1KZ owner who's regretted an aftermarket exhaust irrespective of all the many brands and the 2 sizes on offer??
Chips are a dark art to me. Threads giving them neg feedback but the brand I bought always came highly recommended by the engine gurus (not me) you can alter the setting and turn them off, just left mine a rec factory as I don't want to kill the motor.
Re economy, I've never bothered about any of this. TBH, I don't often use the vehicle, so very sorry. However you use less right foot to get there with the mods so you may only loose a bit. It's accessories /weight that also kill the economy. If I've nailed off the last 50k engine longevity, I'll live with it.

Correct. For ~ a 2.1 tonne solid vehicle at 96KW is 'old school' (340nm torque). (I've the 4spd auto). They are getting very antiquated. Europe had the 1kd from 2000..I understand the manual (KZ) goes far better though. I hope it helps. Good luck with your searches for more power of which there are many forms. I'm finished now but many get it dynoed down the track!

I have a prado but my old man has had nt and just bought an nw pajero. He loves them. They dont hold their value as well but they are cheaper. He hasn't had 1 problem so is very happy with build quality.

Just my 2c, the pajeros are a bit more expensive to service, even though they are only serviced every 15 as apposed to 10 for 1kd and 5 for 1kz. The cheapest out of the three to maintain long term in my oppinion would be the 1kz, but as others have said, they are a bit old and archaic. I would jump on the 1kd, budget for injectors every 120 and smile every time you drive it.

Stienbauer chip seems to avoid any dislikes so must be good.
                              1kz @ 110 will get me 1250kms.
Crank it up to 125-130 and it comes back to about 1000km range.
