D4D 10L/100km is not indicative of what I'm getting BUT I've got:
    ARB Winch Bar
    ARB Rear Bar
    ARB roof rack
    Winch.
    Dual battery

Given all the mods you have on your Grande, I would say a new Prado would be unlikely to remain stock, so 10l/100km's is well.... optimistic.
You could argue the same with the petrol though, so the overall fuel saving might remain similar.

What's your fuel consumption figures? I hear people averaging 9's combined in a standard 150. So I took a stab at 10L/100km to be conservative towards diesels and I get 15L/100km with my Grande.

        I'm at a pretty consistent 11.5L/100klms for a 120 D4D auto with ATS fitted.

Been tracking my D4D on fuelly for 20,659km. average is 12L/100. Best is 9.3L/100
That's with 2" lift, roof bars, awning, bulbar, dual battery and rear drawers. 40% city 60%highway. 500km of that towing a 1T camper trailer.
          Averaging $1.44 per litre
That includes a week in the High Country and a week on Fraser. Fraser was up around 16L/100

            Fuel prices:

Bugger all really, approx. 2 tanks @ 20,000klms, considering the V6 will go for ever and the D4D is a lottery...

Every time this debate comes its based on assumptions, those fuel prices are not indicative of what we pay for fuel here, Diesel is currently around 5c / litre cheaper than Petrol, and saw Diesel as much as 15c a litre cheaper than Petrol last week.

Those numbers would make quite a bit more difference to your equation, and historically (last 30 years) Diesel has been cheaper than Petrol.

Go back to your original assumptions and our (country) fuel prices, your $1500 a year better of fuel wise with the Diesel, over a ten year ownership that's 15 grand, that's a lot of cheddar! Granted the Diesel figures here may be optimistic, but so might the Petrol figures given others driving style.

As I have said before, the way the numbers add up for one person doesn't mean they add up that way for another.

Enough savings to pay for a new long motor when you win the lottery and it cracks a piston...

Or buy a new chassis for your V6 when the engine mount falls through the chassis!

Assumptions are made by the person making the calculation and therefore the result is relevant to that person.

The advice has been to also consider the V6 and do your own maths because you can only be happy with your own purchase once you have considered all costs. Many people buy into diesels purely on the fuel consumption savings and don't realise that the injectors are a consumable item.

The calculations are examples because D4D brought it up. Anyone can make their own assumptions and do their own calcs based on what they think the correct fuel consumption should be and their local fuel prices. I've used the price of unleaded when it is at the lowest point of the price cycle due to the massive tank, I have been able to always fill up at the lowest price.

Edit: The calculation/spreadsheet if anyone is interested. Have a play with the various figures to make your own conclusion

When I bought my VX V6 7 years ago it was 2 years old and had 50,000 km on it and was about $5-6,000 cheaper than the diesel equivalent. 100,000 km later I figure that I am close to the break even point on fuel useage BUT at 150000 km in the D4D I would have replaced injectors by now so I am still in front . The used price gap is down to about $3000. On a recent 14000 km trip from Sydney to Broome and back towing a 1 tonne camper I averaged about 20 l/100 km with a best of 18 and a worst of 24 into a howling 30kph wind for 4 days on dirt pressures [28psi]. The roof rack with spare wheel, high lift and Maxtracs didn't help. A 150 D4d with me for a lot of the trip was about 30% better in the same conditions. Sydney outskirts give about 15-16 l/100km. In the next 12 months the car will probably only do about 7000 km and no towing. Horses for course over the long term but it really comes down to how many kms and how much towing and what you tow. Don't forget that the 150 V6 is more economical than the 120 as well. AND I like that V6 growl at 3000 rpm and the total lack of engine noise elsewhere!

Considering petrols been around $1.40 something here for a while and diesels only been $1.29 for ages and the fact that you pay a couple of hundred more for rego as well. But it all depends on how much towing you are going to be doing whether a petrol or diesel is more suited to you.
I also don't like the fact that I'm sitting on 150+ ltrs of explosive fuel personally.

We have officially decided to buy neither car and hold off for a while! Hard to take the jump into buying a diesel after reading some of the horror stories (though I know you only read about the bad ones, not the other hundred good ones). Going to wait it out, do a bit more thinking and then make a decision - it will be a 150, just not sure which fuel bowser we will be pulling up next to in it yet. If we do go diesel we will definitely buy a tech stream, and also look at getting one a bit newer so we aren't replacing the injectors a couple of months after purchasing it...well hopefully not anyway.
Thanks all for your advice - and frightening the hell out of my wife! Good thing she loves Prado's just as much as I do.
