  • How's your 120 V6 going?

    I'm looking at buying a used 120 V6 either a VX or a Grande. 05 up.

It's going to be a big change as I currently have a 2011 VE Commodore and it's been faultless. Just trying to get my head around going back 6 years!

Anyway, I know they are reliable overall, but I'm more concerned about the ancillary items. Water pumps, radiators, steering rack, electrics.. You get the picture.

    How's your rig going?

    280,000km on my 04 Grande.

Had a wheel bearing, Front brake rotors, the fuel hose between the two fuel tanks need to be replaced.

Other than that just the normal maintainence items .

Probably have to look at the radiator at some stage in the near future.

      Hi
I have only had my 05 Grande for 5 days so cannot comment from experience.
From what I have researched the following areas are of concern.

      Cracked dashboards
      Cracks in inner wheel arch/guard
Rust on leading edge of sunroof glass

Feel free to add to the list.

        Hey 6834.
Had the 120 for a few years now, bought it with 168000 on the clock, 288000 now. She always get a hard time out the bush in mud etc and tows a 2 ton caravan frequently.
New front wheel bearings at around 240000
        Starter motor around 250000.
Machined the discs around 260000 and the dash is now cracked above the instument cluster.
No issues at all with anything else.
        Cheers.

The only things we've had to replace are the cats. We've had our 2007 GXL for nearly 2 years now. Other than that it's just normal maintenance (brake pads, oil in various parts).
2007 GXL V6 - ARB Bullbar with LED lights, snorkel, extractors, 2 1/4" dual exhaust, K&N filter, dimpled/slotted rotors, headrest dvd players, Ebay Satnav/reverse camera, GME 3100TX, Tigerz11 Side awning on custom brackets with Maxtrax mounts, 300W Invertor, ARB Underbody protection, Lightbar and STZ 265/70 tyres.
Wish list in order I'll get them: Sliders, 2" lift, E-locker, Winch bar with winch.

Had my 05 VX V6 since new. Only 150k on the clock. Only issue is the cracked dash. Continues to purr like a kitten. No plans to part ways rid any time soon.

Had my grande for a few months now, couldn't be happier.
Came from a VY SS - which is still in the shed for sale - and haven't driven it once, so thats how much I love the Prado!

Only thing I did was replace the rear airbags as there was a slow leak in one, but they were 12 years old.
Apart from that, im convincing my wife the front suspension has sagged a little to justify new springs and shocks - conveniently with a 2 inch lift.....

Love mine. This is my 3rd prado (previous ones were 90 series, one V6 one turbo diesel). Drive train wise I don't think you would find any thing more reliable. I love mine did I say lol.... Like to drink a bit (prado that is) but love that VVTI sound under full throttle and when you blow little buzz boxes of into the weeds cause they think they were going to beat you off at the lights and intended to merge across in front of you. Mines coming up for 170k. Oil and filter every 10K (I use genuine for both) usual maintenance, and love the sand/beach, just plant the foot and she goes. I have 2 inch lift, bulbar, A/T's etc and must say love driving it. My wife has the new mazda 3 (well 12 months old now) I'd still prefer to jump in the prado and drive it even though the mazda uses half the fuel.

Late 05 VX. Coming up to 150000 and ready for the next 150000. The car has done every major track in Aust. but has been treated like a baby and not thrashed. Problems? New A/C condenser after some nong [!!!!] had a spanner slip and cause a leak. While it was out the bottom of the radiator was found to be corroded on the outside [perfect inside] and was replaced. Both aftermarket parts and not at all dear. New back rotors at 120000. Inner guards fine and dash not cracked nor are the engine mounts a problem.. Yes it will use 30% more fuel than a diesel but it growls when you give it a bootfull and is totally silent at all other times. Just back from a 14500 km trip towing a camper trailer- no problems and as usual used not a drop of oil. I have been looking at 150 GXL diesels but I hate the back seat setup and the constant diesel clatter. Maybe the new motor will tempt me into a new GX but every time I get into the silent, rattle free V6 and put the foot down I think I am mad for changing. They are that good.

Just sold our manual v6 120, 265,000kms, was faultless. Now trying to remember why we sold it. Interior was pretty immaculate, gearbox fine, ran beautifully and smooth to drive. Best car I've ever owned, would have no hesitation buying another or recommending one.

Hey all thanks for messages. I found a 2005 V6 Grande with 183k for 16500. Most history but missing a few invoices. In pretty good nick apart from pretty bad cracked dash.

Honestly the only thing that worries me is the sunroof rusting and also the rear airbags.

Is that an ok buy for price and Kms?

                          @6834cc

Sunroof - $700 from Toyo (It's localised rust so it is not always as bad as it looks)
Airbags - Around $300 each from Toyo

If it's a 1GRFE I'd keep an eye out for Timing Cover leak, Rear Main leak...and the Pump for the ABS unit is likely to die at some point in time (it is a 12v pump after all) which is roughly $900. Outside of those, I don't know of any really reoccurring problems with costly repair.

I'd say it's going cheap at that price.
