  • 2005 V6 GXL 260000 kms keep or sell?

Hi, I bought my Prado 2 years ago, it's my second Prado as I upgraded from my much loved blues mobile (blue 90's series)
This one is a 2005 v6 with an lpg conversion, GXL.
We bought it with high kms (237000) 2 years ago as it was an ex-pilot vehicle for oversize loads.
It is an excellent family car but I am worried that due to the higher kms (now 260000) we might start to have problems.
We always service it every 10,000kms but recently it had an oil leak which is now fixed and then it broke down due to alternator failure
    on our family holiday recently.
So here's my dilemma... Keep or sell!!??
Thoughts / experience / comments please... Cheers

If you have the money for a new one or near new then yeh go ahead, if you don't then i would say no. Still low k's for a petrol motor and all it will cost is any breakages. Buy another 2nd hand one and you never know what you're getting anyway.

Thanks for that I guess I wasn't sure what is the consensus on how many kms you get out of the petrol 4L V6 generally and when you usually have to start spending big dollars on the engine. Also does LPG conversion impact the longevity/durability of these motors? We love the car and with 2 young kids would like to keep it as the family wagon, we would be tempted to trade up but hey who really wants to borrow money right now, this ones paid for! :-)

My 90 series has just passed the 420000 mark and is still purring happily, not using oil etc. did the starter motor contacts recently and had an alternator about 100000 kms ago. Recently bought a 120 petrol with 200000 on the clock and hope to get similar life from it.

1997 petrol auto, 430 000km. Still going strong.
2004 petrol auto, 233 000km. Cracked dash and no help from Toyota!

The motor itself is reportedly getting in excess of 400,000km from a well serviced example. Your issue will be the ancillary items like alternators, starter motors, brakes etc. Admittedly brake condition should be picked up during a service for pads and rotors but master cylinders etc can't be.

Thanks brookseye for posting, Ive been asking myself the same question Re my 2004 petrol with 105.000 K's. Whether to keep it or trade up.

I know of v6 Prados with over half a million kms on them. Still going strong.
My highway one just hit 232k on the easter trip. Still pulls good fuel economy and power. I can't see why i should move it on yet either but have been considering it too, just unsure.

Thanks all. I had the mechanic check over it, just spent $1425 getting a new alternator and battery fitted to it. Expensive week as I went and spent another $1065 on 4 new Pirelli Scorpion all terrains and a wheel alignment. Apparently she's got a couple of minor oil leaks, but apart from that all good. Little things are annoying me, the passenger side door seal leaks resulting in wet seat belt and seat when it rains, and the power window controls are playing up. Apart from that hopefully it is worth us hanging on to as a family car for a few more years! More thoughts / comments are welcome! Cheers,
