Funny enough, my wife has a 12 month old Merc which cost a lot more, but has more door chips and scratches from shopping than my Prado gets from going bush

So $6,000 for 7 airbags, no towbar, no tint but essentially the same vehicle - I DON"T THINK SO.
$71000 seems a bit high. I was quoted $69226 for a GXL auto diesel incl metallic paint, rego etc and tinting with no discounting.

The 150 also has reverse camera, reverse sensors, multi zone climate control, audio aux input, bluetooth and some extra control systems as well as the airbags so the extra cost is not as bad as it seems at first.
I went back into Goldfields Toyota today and the GXL inside the showroom has a big notice on the window which clearly says "$70,582 incl delivery, rego, stamp duty and metallic paint. It only has factory privacy tint in the glass, no towbar

Here in WA we pay a little more in stamp duty than our eastern states cousins.

Was just wondering who has read the 4x4 Autralia 4wdoty article in the current edition of the mag. The GXL manaul came in second place to the Disco4 (and only just 2nd). The Kakadu came in last place and was beaten by the Paj GLS and RRSport. Even with all the addtional extras and rear diff lock on the Kakadu their take was the GXL was leaps and bounds ahead in bush-ability. ..... and $28k cheaper.
Anyway this is just 5 guys from 1 magazines's opinion.

          Yes, I have it,

I find it funny that they take points from the Kakadu for all its gadgets and cost, yet in the recap they give points to the disco that won for value for money and full list of driver aides?? Both almost the same as the Kak's
Later in the mag they do a Kakadu review and dislike the gadgets that the flag ship has, quoting that the features (mostly the camera system) is a gimmick.

As I have a Kakadu on order I will be getting all the 4x4 mag releases for keepers and will find it interesting what the other authors think.

It does seem to me that most these publications enjoy toyota bashing though!

            G'day Simba,
Norfmally I would totally agree with the 'toyota bashing' tag, however the GXL did come second. I one of the main issues was in the bush-ability test where thye said the rear air bags where susteptable (is that even a word) to damage and puncture and thisng like the camera being somewhat of a gimick due to the fact they too where waiting to detroyed when off-road. The other thing I found rather interesting was they rated the comfort of the GXL far above the Kakadu's leather. In terms of the traction aids I think the point they where making was that the Disco and the Paj's gadgets just work better. I, for one, would take a GXL over the Kakadu in a heart beat as on afforadablitiy and value for money the GXL seams, to me, win hands down. But I guess these things are all relative, if you can afford to spend around $90-$100K on a Prado then all powern to you.

Anyway this is just mag's opinion, so lets wait and see what Overlander and 4WDAction have to say.

              Hi d4dazz,
I am in a position where I got the kakadu for about the same price as you would get the gxl for.
I feel I would have been mad not to have gone for this option... Although I get the discount for all toyota's, and could have saved a lot on the gxl as well.

I will be using it to tow a van mostly so the air bags should help, and the DVD for the kids, a god send I'm sure. I will also be taking it off road, but need a lot more experience before I attempt a major adventure.
All in all I think from what I've seen and thr reserch I've done, that the reviewers in this instance were way harsh on the kakadu.

The point I was trying to get across is the disco that won, won on the merits that put the Kakadu in 5th place, and that every time I read an article on a new toyota the author always slams it for something or other regardless of the model.

                I'd love those discounts......
I think you're right on the money with the comments about vehicle bias by mag reporters. 4X4 Aust are probably the worst too. With Ron Moon's influence if it's not a Nissan it's no good. A Nissan Pulsar would have won the 4x4OTY award had it been tested.

Question: How do you finf the 150 towing your caravan? I have a D4D 120 and tow a Jayco Dove Outback and I'm very impressed. I'm due to update in the next couple of months and have been looking at other manufactures due to the price of the 150, but I keep coming abck to the Prado's towing ability.

I’ve read through the same article and agree with everyone’s comments. Personally I’ve found it a bit frustrating (reading the article, and some comments on the forum regarding the Kakadu), obviously because I’ve bought a Kakadu myself, and it’s hard not to take it personal when you own one! But I understand everyone has different requirements and expectations in a 4x4, and it really boils down to what you want out of it. If you get what you want in the vehicle you purchase, I guess no one’s opinions really matter. I can’t help but comment because when you read articles like in the 4x4 Mag, it can turn off potential buyers. For me the big winner with the Kakadu, and Prado’s in general – is the reputation, aftermarket parts/mods, and luxury of the Kakadu. I see the majority of users on this forum would probably go the GXL or VX, and I can see why – again I feel I am part of a smaller group who also want that luxury feel and comfort and can afford to fork out cash for it. What surprised me about the article in the mag was the reference to the GXL being more comfortable than the Kakadu!? Having said that, I didn’t have an awful lot of load in the vehicle, so they’re probably right (I test drove a GXL, VX and Kakadu before going ahead). Speaking in general however, day to day driving in the Kakadu definitely won me over. The DVD system wins the kids over for the long trips, and the resale value compared to the other brands will always be a positive. A lot of the negative reviews of the Kakadu/Prado I feel, can easily be overcome with the right modifications (suspension upgrade/lift, DP Chip, etc), when I look at the other vehicle makes/models, I just don’t see the same aftermarket support – especially the Disco 4.

Anyhow, that’s my 2c – and if anyone out there wants any real feedback on the Kakadu (if you’re looking to buy one), I’m happy to provide feedback.

Why don't you write a thread highlighting (in words and pics) your Kakadu and all the things you like about it?

Got another quote today for a Prado GXL TD auto with metalic paint. No other options.

                      RRP on road $69844.52.
Salary sacrifice fleet discount price $63500.

This equates to a discount of a bit over $4400. The rest is the reduction in LCT and GST. The fleet discount on the Pajero was almost double this but then it is an older model.

What sort of discount should I be expecting? Does this sound like a reasonable deal?

After doin many deals (myself and also my old boy) pretty much get to the bottom line...on a $70,000 GXL TD auto 150, i would expect to get it for $61-62 on the road. when i did the deal on the 200 series, i went in with the figure of $80,000 on the road based on a average RRP of $93-94, in the end we got to $81,500 (then got the $1k price increase 1 month later no way out on that) so pretty close and i suspect i had another $500 to play with but after driving and dealing all day with 7 different dealers i was happy

so i reckon $8-9k off is acheivable but you have to be good with playing the mind games and working out figures quickly, the "fleet discount" is a quick way to getting a good sum off but i feel in most cases you can do better....

anyone want me to get them a 150? i would love to go into the lions den again for another crack....BUT as it is a new model i feel they just wont play ball as there are plenty who will walk in , get $2k off and think they have mastered the deal of the century

                        cheers

Well, for what its worth, I managed to get a Kakadu (D4D) with, rubber floor mats all round, Toyota nudge bar, front tint, and install my GME UHF for sub $90k.....

Went to 2 dealers, one was $95k, and didnt want to budge, other sharpened his pencil when I said I would sign on the spot if we could agree a price.

There was a trade involved, but even at 10% over redbook best price, Kakadu with options as above about $88k driveaway, and thanks Kev for the 50% tax offset to sweeten the deal.

Ordered last week Nov 09 (at launch), picked up Dec 6....

Agree there is some price flexibility in top-end models, just a matter of finding the right dealer at the right time. Some dealers still thinking they will walk out the door and dont need to compete, others are more realistic..... Good Luck.

Just picked up the 4x4 Australia magazine and read the article. I am a little surprised at the bias the authors show towards Disco4 and against Kakadu. They try to disguise the bias at times with some comforting comments about the Kakadu, but come on guys.......

I had the budget to afford any of the cars in this category and did my own evaluation in November. I have never owned a Landy before (but have lots of friends who own Disco3's and RR Sport's), and I have also never owned a Prado before (but have lots of freinds who do). I have owned other 4WD's. My basic survey showed gripes with reliability and cost involved in owning and maintaining the Landy's (I inculde Range Rover in this comment) and very little in comparison from Toyota Prado owners. From an offroad perspective, my friends who own both, and the trips they have done together, say good and bad about both, but agree that both get the job done......

So, when I decided to buy a new vehicle I did the rounds. Went over the RR Sport and Disco4 at my local dealer. Nice vehicles, but I couldnt see 20-30 grand difference in them from the Prado Kakadu, particularly when I took reliability and maintenance issues into account from my survey of friends. Also, the article is misleading in comparing cost on a like for like basis. I know because I did it. Buying the RR sport with as close a spec as you can get to the Kakadu was $120k drive away. Buying a HSE Disco 4 (thats the comparable model to the Kakadu...) was $125k drive away. I got my Kakadu with some extras for about $88k drive away. There is also a considerable wait for both vehicles >3 months. My local dealer has one of each as demo's and nothing coming in until March 2010. I will add that I was not impressed by the dealer trying to convince me that there is a prestige factor in owning a RR or Disco over a Toyota. That is an opinion I dont share.

Alot of my friends have gone for the Prado GXL, and thats a great choice. I just had extra budget and glad I spent it on the Kakadu rather than going the RR or Disco 4. Oh, and did I mention that my friends who own Disco 3's who have now seen and driven in my Kakadu are alrready questioning their loyalty to LandRover when they next change vehicles.....

I have only had the Kakadu a month, but I am very happy with my decision. Yes, I would have liked to see Toyota put a V6 diesel in it, but my driving style suits the D4D and I am getting 9.5l around town, havent done a road trip yet, but will test it out in mid Feb when I take it on a 2000km trip to Airlie Beach.

There you go, my 2 cents worth on the 4x4 artilce as well....
