  • Considering selling the Prado

I'm a couple of months away from an operation that may bring with it a sebatical of between 12 and 18 months where i'll be in no real condition to drive or be driven in the bush and possibly even dirt roads.
so ATM I'm considering selling the prado to:
*save on rego, insurance etc etc (we have another smaller car in the house)
*add $$$$ to the account to pay off debt and be completely debt free
*add $$$$$ to be sure I can afford things I need in the short term
*any other reason cause it won't be used so in reality it's probably a $$$$$$ liability just sitting there and rotting away.

I've come up with 3 options so far:
    1. Keep it and put it into 'storage' in the shed/garage (given the above this may not happen, but hey - it's an option)
    2. Offer the accessories I have on the car up for sale yet still keep the car till they are all gone then sell the car as a stocker . If this was to happen I recon the best way would be to get the standard bits off whoevers car my bits go to kinda like you get my bits, i get your bits plus a few $$$$$ (hope that makes sense)
    3. Sell the car as is with all the gear on it.

There are pro's and con's for each (for which I'm keeping a list while I work through it and decide - or is that procrastinate!!!) and wondered if any one would be willing to add their 2 bobs worth as you might think of something i haven't

    Re: Considering selling the Prado

Hi Dhula. you don't give us any info on the year, condiiton of the car, mileage, if it's under a lease or you own it outright, that would all help.
For example a 2009 model is going to depreciate more over a year compared to a 2006. ( in absolute $ terms ). If you have to pay out a lease it can be big $ in penalties.
Personally, in your situation, and IF I had the room to store it undercover, and IF had invested a lot in accessories and setting it up, AND intended to get back into it one day, I'd keep it. I'd also save myself the extra stress and hassle of the sales negotiation process, which you probably don't need right now either, prior to an op.
You need to weigh up - cost of rego and insurance /depreciation for a year is possibly less than what you'd lose in the selling, re-buying/refitting ( maybe just get third party fire and theft insurance for a year )
    Cheers, Wayne

If you are looking at storing for an extended period of time then be aware that there may be issues with the fuel so my be best to drain the tanks. Others may be able to comment on this but if you have diesel then this only has a shelf life of about four months I believe. Possibly need to consider the storagebility of other fluids that sit idel as well as the battery(s).

As far as selling the accessories you need to consider if they can be sold or if you still have the genuine if you wish to return the vehcile to stock. The only accessories I would consider selling seperatly would be:
      • UHF[/*:m:2rhei86v]
      • Driving Lights[/*:m:2rhei86v]
      • Roof Rack[/*:m:2rhei86v]
      • Air Compressor[/*:m:2rhei86v]

Other accessories such as bullbar (or alloy roo bar), suspension, tyres would be too much effort for return to change off IMO

that may bring with it a sebatical
You need to be sure on this point.. If it is a yes, then I would personally be selling it.. Having them sitting around is crazy as they just depreciate shockingly.

I'd be asking myself how easy will it be to get back to where I am now when things get back to normal. I know in my case it would probably be never so I'd be inclinded to keep the vehicle no matter what. I think you have the 90 series so depreciation isnt such a big issue I would have thought.

            Re: Considering selling the Prado

            Hi Duhla
My suggestion is to take one thing at a time. I don't know what speedbump you're up against, but I know from my own near interaction with the reaper a few years back that it's really good to have something to focus on while you're (hopefully) on the slow road to recovery, in my own instance from major surgery. I kept thinking and planning about how I was going to go 4WDing, and fishing, again when I was well and stronger. Getting fit enough to be able to get back into the great outdoors was certainly a motivator. I wouldn't rush things. I don't think your Prado will depreciate too much if you give it a few months to see how things go and then reappraise the situation. If in 3 months time it still seems that selling the vehicle is the best decision, then run with it. But don't make any rushed decisions. If your vehicle is set up the way you want it, I doubt if you'll be able to replace it in a year or so with with the same quality set up with the money you get for it now.
            Good luck.

              Re: Considering selling the Prado

thanks for all the input everyone.

just to explain a bit, i am up for an eye operation which will see a recovery time (recovery to legal vision) that ranges from 6 weeks to 6 months when it all goes smoothly and anything up to 18 months (worst known case) if it does not. that and the prospect of no sight if it doesn't go well at all. then there is the other eye to get done so it all starts again. doc says it's one (both really) of the worst he's seen so i could be at the extreme end of recovery if all goes well.

i have spoken with many that have had the same operation but their success still doesn't calm my fears completely.

anyways, thank you for your input and comments as it has raised a few things we hadn't thought of.

our impending house move has given us a forced time to think and consider properly (as the prado is the only car in the house with a towbar) which in hindsight is a good thing

              again, thanks for your comments.

              cheers
