  • 120 Series - 340K too much?

    Hi all

Currently doing the research into picking up a Prado, and have come across a 120 series (2005 model) that looks fairly clean (given the age and mileage) and is a great price.

BUT it's got 340K on the clock. Looking at the service receipts, it looks to have had regular servicing, and it was living it's life out at Mitchell, QLD so I'm very inclined to believe alot of those km's are genuine highway k's (Mitchell is 600km's from Brisbane, so it's definitely rural rather than urban).

It's got the 4.0L petrol, and from a quick look around these are in the FJ and a few others, so that would suggest Toyota having some faith in them. I've seen a few posts while searching of FJ's with 270K miles (so around the 400K+ km mark) and a few Canadian FJ's with 400k km as well.

It'd be more of a weekend explorer, hit Fraser/Bribie/Moreton/Straddie every couple of weekends in summer, type of car, but for a few months would be a 'daily' (not much driving given COVID, but it'd be the only car probably for 6 months, so some decent reliability would be required).

Chasing some thoughts from the community before investing time in a proper inspection. For reference, asking price is $11,000 - also has an ARB bar on it, so figure that's of some value.

    Cheers

Edit: just to add, I realistically do about 10-15K a year, so if it lasted 3 or 4 years to tick over the 400K mark, that'd probably be value for money IMO. Just chasing some (hopefully) unbiased opinions

I recently purchased this exact model, 2005 as well. $11k is reasonable enough for such high KMs and if you're happy to get at least 3-4 years out of it, then the risk is reduced somewhat. However, something I've experienced first-hand since buying my Prado is that whilst the service books are fully up to date, this definitely doesn't mean it has been serviced properly. My car seems not to have had the oil changed as regularly as it should have, and even having been serviced this year, the oil is dirtier than it should be. Don't forget that there are many parts that wear out and 340k KMs worth of wear is quite a lot. You may pay $11k but then end up forking out another ~$2-3k on top to bring it up to a condition you're comfortable with.

The ~$1500 ARB bar aside, for your scenario, I'd personally hold out for another one with 200k+ KMs for $13-15k.

You must live in or near Brissy I take it. My advice is to buy one locally with less kms as mentioned above if you can afford it. Go on Carsales & have a look. Not the largest range available right now but good ones still come up every now & again & when they do pounce fast because 120 Prados sell fast. Last night I saw a $15,000 dark blue one with 200,000km on it in mint condition. Now that’s a good deal. Many go for $17,000ish when like that. At 340,000km you’re approaching territory where many bushes & ball joints are worn. If you can’t change those yourself you’re up for a couple of grand.

        Yep, I'm in Brissy.

This one is local, just looks like it's been traded in and trucked down here.

I am sort of in two minds, I'm confident doing the work if it comes up, but would rather not, so those are good things to consider.

Problem is I'm in a tight spot, have been without a car for 3 weeks and need to get something sorted soon, cheaper the better as a stop-gap. Cost and time for repairs for my current car are too prohibitive to get done now, so would rather get something than keep ubering everywhere when PT can't get there, and especially with COVID don't want to be catching PT if I can avoid it. Figured something that can benefit the off-road aspect would be a good "two birds with one stone" approach.

        Cheers for the input guys

fork out 60-70 for 650x480 res minimum led inspection camera - stick in the top end of engine with engine oil cap off - if there's no sludge or very minimal sludge then i wouldnt be unhappy picking one up - cheers
