We are planning a getaway to Central Qld, ie west of Rocky, for our holidays in May. We will have approximately one and a half weeks to waste

We have a couple of 4WD tour books, ie Gregory's 4WD Tours & Dirty Weekends Central Qld. They both recommend Carnavon Gorge, Mt Moffatt, the Expedition Mountains & Rosa Santora (?) as places to go and get the car dirty. I have also been online and looked at information for Blackdown Tableland as well. Can anyone recommend anywhere else in the same sort of area to go to? Any other recommendations on what to see and do (not necessarily 4WDing) in the area?

    Cheers!

Last year we did both Carnoarvon Gorge and Cania Gorge.
We are going to the Qld 4wd Corroboree this weekend, then heading back to Cania Gorge as I am leading a club trip up there after the Corroboree.
Carnarvon is a MUST do at some stage of your life.
If you do the full 22 k walk, take heaps of water, start early and best to walk all the way to the end, then on the way back take all the off tracks to visit all the attractions.
If you dont do it like that you have a long 11 k walk back when you are buggered. Plan on it taking 8 hours at least for the full walk.

I was at the Gorge recently. Not really a 4wd track but we got very dirty as we had 2 nights of thunderstorm downpours. I took a few photos of the "art gallery" and patched them together .... 1mb file

I was at Blackdown at Easter and the place still had a road or two closed. I think Carnavorn Gorge had only just opened also.
National parks should have both fully opened now.
Blackdown, has its No. 1 spot of Rainbow Waters which is worth the 1/2 hour walk to see it.

They tell me that Fairburn dam is a nice place to camp. One of the locals to that area might know more.
The bank of the Calliope river just down from the Historical village is a free spot to camp also. The village is probably worth a look too.

                    Thanks for your replies everyone.

We have had to put off the trip to central Qld until later in the year now.

Six weeks ago Jeff ruptured his Achilles Tendon, had surgery on it, was in a plaster cast for 5 weeks, and mid-last week he went into an Orthapaedic Boot. However, last Monday he managed to rupture it again, resulting in more surgery with a poor prognosis of a permanent limp, another 6-8 weeks in a cast, orthapaedic boot for 8 weeks, followed by intense physio.

Had he not reinjured the foot, we would have been able to do the trip as we would have been able to campo and do some basic hiking. Now that he is back in a cast and on crutches again, I figure the trip isn't worth doing if we are only going to do half the stuff we wanted to.

What a bummer. Sorry to hear that Esie.

Hope Jeff's achiles recovers properly and you can book this trip for later in the year.

                      Cheers

I too will be taking a look around west of Rock, Gladstone etc, after a stint at 1770 and Yepoon.

Does anyone out there know where I can get a copy of Dirty Weekends - Central Queensland, I appears this is no longer in print.

Any other camping spots for a young family are also welcome.

                          Mick.

Byfield forest is a good spot with a camp or two beside a deep waterhole which runs all year - I think.
It is not too far of a run to 5 rocks from there which is scenic.

Ouch!! Only just looked into this thread...

How's the recovery coming along? I've heard the Achillies Tendon is a rather painful injury
                              Cheers, Leon
There's no such thing as a wrong turn... it's just the scenic route!
