In the book mentioned there is a trip called "Touring the Turon" leading to Sofala from there you can stay at Bathurst or head on to Hillend and then cross country to Orange (great river crossing). Awesome family trip.

Gloucester is within easy striking distance of Sydney, and has reasonable accommodation options. Barrington Tops NP and surrounds has some fantastic 4WD options and some beautiful countryside.
