Been exploring on Nth Stradbroke Island this week and have spent a lot of time on the sand. Looking for an alternative, we spotted the Fishermans Track on the map. The Fisherman's Track is listed as a through route on the Hema map we have, however as we found out it is no longer the case, as the proximity to a sandmine has closed the northern end.
It's still worth a look from the south (Tazi Rd end), as the Keyhole Lagoons have a couple of picnic areas and it would be OK for a swim in summer although the water was very cold. The map showed a northern entry onto the Main beach via a track that appeared to follow a creek, so we went for a look. I might point out that every vehicle we met that was coming the other way was saying "you know you can't get out this way, dontcha?")
You end up driving down the middle of a shallow creek for a couple of hundred metres and then out onto the beach - pretty cool for a lowtime 4 wheeler like me, although after this week I reckon there's no beach sand conditions I won't be able to cope with. (Probably shouldn't tempt fate by making that sort of statement, but the Prado just felt so capable).
I must point out I walked the creek in it's entirety to check on the conditions before I was confident we'd make it. For the most part it is sand/hardpacked gravel apart from the last 50 metres onto the beach, which is all sand. There's a small "dry" area where you can recce the final leg from which was handy and for the most part the water was about 50mm deep.
Some photos - sorry about the change in size, for some reason they wouldn't display properly in any other ratio
Pictures resized. Hope this helps MOD
