  • Fishermans Track Nth Stradbroke Island

Been exploring on Nth Stradbroke Island this week and have spent a lot of time on the sand. Looking for an alternative, we spotted the Fishermans Track on the map. The Fisherman's Track is listed as a through route on the Hema map we have, however as we found out it is no longer the case, as the proximity to a sandmine has closed the northern end.

It's still worth a look from the south (Tazi Rd end), as the Keyhole Lagoons have a couple of picnic areas and it would be OK for a swim in summer although the water was very cold. The map showed a northern entry onto the Main beach via a track that appeared to follow a creek, so we went for a look. I might point out that every vehicle we met that was coming the other way was saying "you know you can't get out this way, dontcha?")

You end up driving down the middle of a shallow creek for a couple of hundred metres and then out onto the beach - pretty cool for a lowtime 4 wheeler like me, although after this week I reckon there's no beach sand conditions I won't be able to cope with. (Probably shouldn't tempt fate by making that sort of statement, but the Prado just felt so capable).

I must point out I walked the creek in it's entirety to check on the conditions before I was confident we'd make it. For the most part it is sand/hardpacked gravel apart from the last 50 metres onto the beach, which is all sand. There's a small "dry" area where you can recce the final leg from which was handy and for the most part the water was about 50mm deep.

Some photos - sorry about the change in size, for some reason they wouldn't display properly in any other ratio

Pictures resized. Hope this helps MOD

    Thanks Fozzy,

I've done a lot of driving on Fraser, Cooloola and Moreton but haven't been on the beaches at Nth Stradbroke or Bribie Is. Might need to put Nth Straddie on the list. That creek entry onto the beach looked interesting. What`was the ocean beach like, there was still a lot of erosion at Cooloola when we were there a couple of months ago.

I notice you're just down the road at Jamboree Hts, we are at Westlake.

        Steven,

There were still a lot of steep banks in the dunes, at an hour or so after high tide we were still driving in quite soft sand no matter whether you went high close to the dune or low onto the waters edge. Even at low tide there was not a whole lot of beach to play in.

The further south you went the wider the beach became. The southern tip had heaps of sand.

I reckon we've passed each other in the burbs at one time or another if you're at Westlake, for sure.

We were over at Straddie a couple of weekends ago, and also drove the Fisherman's Track, from south to north. We came out the same way onto the beach as you did, so much for "you know you can't get out this way"!

I hear what you are saying Esie, what was strange was that there were a lot of hard-core looking vehicles going south, all with the same message. Some were even talking up how hard part of the track was, but the chicken track at that spot didn't score a moments thought! Everyone's got a different outlook I guess.

I could see from the tyre marks that we certainly weren't the first to go down that route. Funnily enough it was my missus who was keen to do the creek bit, she was pi$$ed that she had to get out and take photos. Same thing happened at Condamine Gorge recently, the water was way up and I was hesitant on one particular crossing but she said go for it, so we did. We live in an incredibly beautiful part of the country IMHO, but I'm sure others have the same opinion.

Nice shots... that entry sure has changed since the last time I used it... back when I had the Honda CRV  (didn't drive it as the CRV would have left half its plastic bits behind ). It was all sand track... no creek to be driven in :?

Fisherman's track is closed from the northern entry point off the main road. Depends where they cut access along the track as to whether "you can't get through" is true or not
I've always enjoyed Straddie's tracks... no matter how deep into things you get your never really that far from any help

Did you get to Tripod Track (lookout)? It's well worth the drive too.
              Cheers, Leon

Re: Fishermans Track Nth Stradbroke Island

Fishermans track is gated at two points. At the northern end (off the coast road) and at the southern end (just north of the Keyhole lakes) this still allows access access to the beach via the creek, as seen in the photos.

This road has not been maintained since the introduction of the gates (Feb 2009) as the mines do not need to use it and the two quarries (1 private and the other a council owned) still have access through the gates.

The creek access to the beach had quite a deep flow up to about April this year (due to the summer rains) up to 500m deep so do be careful.

Must be a different access point than I'm thinking of... might have to go exploring next time I'm over there

Is anyone interested in a group day or weekend over there in a couple of months or so?

esie, a PP weekender would be good. It has always been the regular few that organise the trips and it would be nice if someone else can lead for a change. Perhaps you could nominate yourself as trip leader and organise this run?

                            I'm going this weekend.

Just something to consider is that the "big red cat" are offering a special sunday rate.
The conditions are you must catch the early boat (7am) and return on the same day, get this for $50.

So you can get the barge, beach pass and lunch for what you would normaly pay for the return barge pass.
                            Phone bookings only.

That's a bloody good price. Normally, return 129 when pay online and slightly cheaper if booked through RACQ.
