  • Outback Touring Questions

    Hi All,
We are planning a trip in the NSW July school holidays and I have a couple of questions hopefully some of you more experienced members might be able to answer for me.

What is a realistic avg speed on both the Birdsville and Strzelecki tracks towing a CT. Is 70-75 km/h realistic.
Is it permissable to travel the dog fence between the Strzelecki and Birdsville track.
Is it permissable to travel the Poeppel Line from Haddon Corner west to Mt Frew on the Cadelga-Cordillo Downs track.
Whats the fishing like at Cullyamurra Waterhole
Has anyone driven the Inside Track north to Birdsville with a CT, is it achievable.

    Thanks.

    Re: Outback Touring Questions

We did a trip out that way in '08, Dad was towing a heavy hard floor type camper trailer and had no problems on the inside track, and we travled the birdsville track comfortably around 70-80km/h.
The Strezlecki track would almost be tared by now between Lyndhurst & Moomba, but i could recomend the Old Strezlecki from Merty Merty to Innaminka.

having said that track conditions can change considaralby from year to year, so best to check closer to the time and be prepared to back track. The inside track from birdsvill has had ALOT of water over it at diffetrent times since we drove it.

Im pretty sure you cant drive any of the dog fence, strictly maintenance vehicles only.

      Re: Outback Touring Questions

We drove the Birdsville track in August 09 heading south to Marree. I can say that about the first 80% was like a dirt super highway and we saw many people traveling in holden/ford sedans and wagons etc.
We didnt have a camper trailer and the track was bone dry for the whole trip mind you and the inside track was under water apparently. The last 10-20% was very rocky, make sure your tyre pressures are nice and low especially for this section. We saw a few people with flat tyres.

OK let me see if I can deal with each of these separately

What is a realistic avg speed on both the Birdsville and Strzelecki tracks towing a CT. Is 70-75 km/h realistic.

Birdsville and the Straz are two very different tracks for the following reasons
The straz is used by Santos to support Moomba and is pretty much a freeway just take a lot of care and provide plenty of respect to the heavy vehicles or be prepared to lose an windscreen

The Birdsville track is three tracks. The first 75 or so k's out of BIrdsville are normally pretty easy going at 80 kph then you hit the gibber section to Munbarannie where 80 is about as fast as you want to go unless you really want to get your tyre repair skills up to speed. Also it gives you a better chance to slow down to reduce vehicle damage as the clowns doing over 100 come towards you. After Mungarannie pretty much a dirt road of varying condition but 80 is pretty good as an average

Is it permissable to travel the dog fence between the Strzelecki and Birdsville track.
NO Not unless you want to really annoy the locals and possibly pick up a fine

Is it permissable to travel the Poeppel Line from Haddon Corner west to Mt Frew on the Cadelga-Cordillo Downs track.

No idea what you are talking about here. There is no such thing as the Poeppel Line only Poeppel Corner. Apart from that Cordillo Downs is located on the run into Innamincka so you have me completely confused with this query

Whats the fishing like at Cullyamurra Waterhole

All depends and you need to check to see if you need a licence

Has anyone driven the Inside Track north to Birdsville with a CT, is it achievable.

Inside track varies a lot with rain so impossible to comment on. It varies from as rough as guts to just having the grader go over it, just like a lot of outback tracks. A decent off-road camper trailer will do it no proble

          Thanks all for your replies.

Rob on a Wesprint map I have Revision 7 I think (I left it at work) it shows the SA/QLD border heading west and calls it the Poeppel Line, essentially the border and if you kept going it would become Poeppel Corner. So from Haddon Corner head directly west until you hit the track that passes south through Cadelga to Cordillo Downs then ultimately Innamincka

Whilst the track west to Haddon Corner is ok with a CT (only really one biggish dune near the corner which may give you trouble) from there on consider the border no go. Whilst it's fenced, consider it cross country work in parts and it covers private property (working stations) as well.

Also be aware many tracks out here are exploration/well rig tracks and are a maze of unmapped dead ends, many station tracks are also unmapped.

Frew Hill is well south of the border, maybe 10kms or so. I don't think it can be accessed without the land owners permission.

Your best option is to double back and take the Developmental Road onto Cordillo Rd/Dillons Hwy (Both OK for CT's, watch for large rocks on the northern sections and some sandy spots as you get closer to Innaminka) There is some good country to see out this way.

              Re: Outback Touring Questions

We did a similar trip in Augiust 2008. Travelled from Camerons Corner to Innaminka via Bore Track instead of the Strez. Then from Innaminka via Cordillo Downs to Birdsville, then Birdsville and Oodnadatta tracks. See our trip report at http://www.pradopoint.com/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=4219

Bore Track was an excellent run. We took 2 days and camped out along the track. Generally slow, probably averaged 50-60km/hr, but not difficult. A bit sandy at the top end, but we got through with a CT and an off-road caravan without any issues.

Cordillo Downs was also a great run. about 500kms over 2 days, we saw only 1 or 2 other vehicles the whole way. No towns along the track either, so quite isolated.

You will have a great time.
