We've taken our kids camping in winter heaps when they were younger, when it got really cold, we had a double sleeping bag and put the baby in between us, not the most comfortable but solved the problem.

This is how we ended up last year at the 2010 GTG... Lorelai slept in between us just to make sure she didn't roll off the CT bed through the night.
We lined her Port-a-cot with a 'space blanket' under her bottom sheet and heated her bed with a hot water bottle before she went to bed. That got her to sleep and by the time it got really cold in the early morning that is when we moved her into our bed for a few hours.
She didn't really want to keep her beanie on through the night and usually the mittens came off at some stage too.

Council caravan park so no fires were allowed... now I know QLD doesn't get as cold as down south but used outside the tent, pointing towards the tent door it heated enough to take that chill factor out of the tent to make it easier for the kids to get to bed.

I went in Sahara desert in December with wife and kids. it was their first desert trip so i was just worried for night temperatures..
To solve, i decided to supply ourselves a good mountaineering equipment to afford the under-zero Celsius condition of the saharian nigths.
First of all: the tent.
being four people, impossible think to sleep into a roof tent. the 4 people tent are too big and heavy for Prado roof, if you desire to maintain good mobilty on the sand hills (and avoid to roll over!) So I bought a perfect mountaineerig tent , really easy to use,which allow us to repair from wind and cold.

2nd: the sleeping bags.
choose a correct sleeping bag is not a joke: they must be of fill down quality and neither too cold nor too hot. VERY IMPORTANT: the confort temperatures indicated are calculated for naked body.

3td: the stove:
get out from a tent early in the morning in the Sahara could be really traumatic.... so to avoid any risk for kid's health, i bought a gas stove to put near the door of the tent, to warm for some minutes and help them to get off their dress before to sleep, or getting out of the sleeping bag...

Very important: the stove uses the same gas cylinder of the cooker.
these choices have proven successful, and we faced the cold nights in the Sahara with sufficient comfort.
